Daily Devotional: Psalms 55:9-15

Ps 55:9-15

9 Confuse the wicked, O Lord, confound their speech, for I see violence and strife in the city. 10 Day and night they prowl about on its walls; malice and abuse are within it. 11 Destructive forces are at work in the city; threats and lies never leave its streets. 12 If an enemy were insulting me, I could endure it; if a foe were raising himself against me, I could hide from him. 13 But it is you, a man like myself, my companion, my close friend, 14 with whom I once enjoyed sweet fellowship as we walked with the throng at the house of God. 15 Let death take my enemies by surprise; let them go down alive to the grave, for evil finds lodging among them.

Matt 5:8-10

8 Blessed are the pure in heart, for they will see God. 9 Blessed are the peacemakers, for they will be called sons of God. 10 Blessed are those who are persecuted because of righteousness, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.

I think back over the life of David and remember when Saul was King and David was his musician and palace helper. He was promoted to eventually become one of the greatest soldiers in Israel’s army. Then because of jealousy, David became the enemy of Saul and had to run and hide in caves while being hunted to take his life. David had done nothing but good for Saul and did not deserve this. Later as king of Israel, his own son tried to kill him and take over his throne. David fled the city of Jerusalem and ran for his life. Those he trusted turned against him.

While David did not understand why things were happening to him on many occasions in his life, he always trusted God to take care of him. He lived with the assurance and conviction that God was in control of his life personally and the nations as well. Even though he did not have the Bible verse that we have today, he knew that God would work all things together for his good and the good of his people. David was always willing to allow God to use him in his way and for his purposes so he accepted the bad along with the good that came to him. He made it his goal to simply obey God in all things to the best of his ability. Even though he failed at times, he always turned to God for forgiveness, help and strength.

Heavenly Father I am thankful for the revelation of your will in the Bible and for the many promises of your constant care and your tender love for me. I am just one of millions and yet you know me by name and have a plan for my life here on earth. Open my eyes to see where you are leading me and give me wisdom to know and to do your will. Help me remember that my life is not about me but is to be about serving you and bringing honor to your name as I serve others. I ask for your guidance in the upcoming elections. I pray in Jesus name.
