Daily Devotional: Psalms 42:1-5

Ps 42:1-5

1 As the deer pants for streams of water, so my soul pants for you, O God. 2 My soul thirsts for God, for the living God. When can I go and meet with God? 3 My tears have been my food day and night, while men say to me all day long, "Where is your God?" 4 These things I remember as I pour out my soul: how I used to go with the multitude, leading the procession to the house of God, with shouts of joy and thanksgiving among the festive throng. 5 Why are you downcast, O my soul? Why so disturbed within me? Put your hope in God, for I will yet praise him, my Savior and my God.

Rom 8:35-39

35 Who shall separate us from the love of Christ? Shall trouble or hardship or persecution or famine or nakedness or danger or sword? 36 As it is written: "For your sake we face death all day long; we are considered as sheep to be slaughtered." 37 No, in all these things we are more than conquerors through him who loved us. 38 For I am convinced that neither death nor life, neither angels nor demons, neither the present nor the future, nor any powers, 39 neither height nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God that is in Christ Jesus our Lord.

Many of us have faced times in our lives when we wondered: where is God when I need him the most? We have faced a dreaded diagnosis or the death of someone we love or we have been told we no longer have our job, an accident or… and the list goes on and on. How can we believe that God really cares or he really loves us and wants what is best for us? As David and Job we ask when can we meet God?

God is faithful. (Notice that has a period – the end of the discussion.) Even when we are not faithful, even when we are weak, even when we don’t understand or know, God is faithful. God is loving, kind, patient and compassionate. He knows all of our trials and he knows what is really best for us. Our lack of understanding does not make him wrong in his wisdom. When we put our trust in God, we will be more than conquerors through Jesus who loves us. So we put our hope in God as we wait for that eternal home in glory that has no sickness or sorrow.

O Lord forgive my sin, my weakness, my doubts and my fears. Increase my faith and fill me with your power and wisdom. Help me open my heart so your love will be perfected in me. Guide me and lead me in your way as you open my heart to your bidding. Be with your people that we may love each other and in so doing, show the world your love and lead others to Jesus. Help me see that this must start with me, in my heart and in my life. Keep me from allowing the things of this world to control me. I humbly pray in the name of Jesus my Lord and King.
