Daily Devotional: Psalms 35:11-18

Ps 35:11-18

11 Ruthless witnesses come forward; they question me on things I know nothing about. 12 They repay me evil for good and leave my soul forlorn. 13 Yet when they were ill, I put on sackcloth and humbled myself with fasting. When my prayers returned to me unanswered, 14 I went about mourning as though for my friend or brother. I bowed my head in grief as though weeping for my mother. 15 But when I stumbled, they gathered in glee; attackers gathered against me when I was unaware. They slandered me without ceasing. 16 Like the ungodly they maliciously mocked; they gnashed their teeth at me. 17 O Lord, how long will you look on? Rescue my life from their ravages, my precious life from these lions. 18 I will give you thanks in the great assembly; among throngs of people I will praise you.

2 Tim 1:11-12

11 And of this gospel I was appointed a herald and an apostle and a teacher. 12 That is why I am suffering as I am. Yet I am not ashamed, because I know whom I have believed, and am convinced that he is able to guard what I have entrusted to him for that day.

David trusted God when everyone else had turned against him. Paul put his trust in God when others deserted him in prison. Jesus entrusted himself to the Father when the crowd was crying for him to be crucified. No matter what we face in life and no matter who (or how many) turns against us, God is with us and will always be by our side. We can always put our trust in him and never be disappointed.

This world in which we live is a fickle place indeed. The masses of people are so easily swayed on any given topic and on any given day. One person is considered a hero in their field only to be turned against and maligned the next day. There have been times when it seems everyone is seeking the help of God but only a few months go by and they all forget him, his blessings and his protection.

We must put our faith in our Lord and seek to please him, not this world. When we seek him and his righteousness above all else, he will never leave us. If we love the Lord God with all our heart, he will guard our eternal destiny until that day.

Heavenly Father keep me from letting this world influence me away from you and from your word. Help me remain steadfast and trust you, even when all around me turns their back on you or seems to be against me. Thank you for those who are a constant help to me and encourage me on a regular basis. Use me in your will as I keep my eyes focused on Jesus and on the things above. Lord, this life is filled with so many problems, sickness and heartaches, so I ask you to be with those who are suffering. Use me as your person to help. In Jesus name.
