Daily Devotional: Psalms 18:16-19

Ps 18:16-19

16 He reached down from on high and took hold of me; he drew me out of deep waters. 17 He rescued me from my powerful enemy, from my foes, who were too strong for me. 18 They confronted me in the day of my disaster, but the LORD was my support. 19 He brought me out into a spacious place; he rescued me because he delighted in me.

Heb 12:2-3

2 Let us fix our eyes on Jesus, the author and perfecter of our faith, who for the joy set before him endured the cross, scorning its shame, and sat down at the right hand of the throne of God. 3 Consider him who endured such opposition from sinful men, so that you will not grow weary and lose heart.

None of us will probably ever face the physical abuse and dangers that David had to face in his lifetime. For years he was hunted by the King of Israel as one would hunt a wild animal. He trusted God to take care of him in all of this. Later in life he was betrayed by his own son who formed a coup and tried to kill him and take over the kingdom from him. As he fled for his life, he trusted God.

Even though he had God on his side (and he knew this) and even though he had multiple opportunities to kill those seeking his life, he refused to do so. He always wanted to leave room for the wrath of God and his vengeance. While David is described as a “man of war” and was a great military leader with great military advisers, he was a man of love and compassion and hated useless killing.

David had his moments when he gave in to sin because of his sexual lusts and because of his pride. But in his heart, he was a man of God who had the heart of God. This was because he had learned to trust God as a young man while keeping the sheep of his father. God delivered him from a bear and later a lion. Because of his faith he was willing to fight and kill Goliath, the Philistine giant.

Like David we can trust God too. No matter what we face in life and not matter who turns against us, we can trust God to take care of us. David had to wait for several years to see the answer of God but he was patient and waited. We may have to wait on God’s timing but he is faithful and will not forsake us.

Heavenly Father I am thankful for all the times you have provided for me when I didn’t know what to do. Thank you for taking care of me when others seemed to want to destroy me. Thank you for your many blessings, both physical, emotional and spiritual. I know I am ever indebted to you and to your marvelous grace in giving your Son to die on the cross for me so I can live with you in eternity. I need your continued forgiveness each day as I fail to be all you want me to be and fall short of your glory. Use me in your will. I pray in the name of Jesus.
