Daily Devotional: Psalms 13:1-6

Ps 13:1-6

1 How long, O LORD? Will you forget me forever? How long will you hide your face from me? 2 How long must I wrestle with my thoughts and every day have sorrow in my heart? How long will my enemy triumph over me? 3 Look on me and answer, O LORD my God. Give light to my eyes, or I will sleep in death; 4 my enemy will say, "I have overcome him," and my foes will rejoice when I fall. 5 But I trust in your unfailing love; my heart rejoices in your salvation. 6 I will sing to the LORD, for he has been good to me.

John 10:14-18

14 "I am the good shepherd; I know my sheep and my sheep know me- 15 just as the Father knows me and I know the Father-and I lay down my life for the sheep. 16 I have other sheep that are not of this sheep pen. I must bring them also. They too will listen to my voice, and there shall be one flock and one shepherd. 17 The reason my Father loves me is that I lay down my life-only to take it up again. 18 No one takes it from me, but I lay it down of my own accord. I have authority to lay it down and authority to take it up again. This command I received from my Father."

The other day I saw a man who had been a great help to me as I was learning a new trade. It had been several years since I had seen him but I knew who he was and I knew his name. What surprised me was that he recognized me and called me by name also. That made me feel pretty good that he remembered my name.

If you are a Christian Jesus knows you and knows your name. In Christ no one falls through the cracks, gets ignored or is forgotten by our Lord. It should make all of us feel pretty good – no, feel really good – that the King of kings and the Lord of all of heaven and earth knows us by name. We are his and he is our friend.

Jesus cares for each of us because he has given his life to make it possible that we have eternal life. He was not forced by anyone to lay down his life but because of his love for the Father and for each of us, he suffered and died on the cross for our sin. Even if all the world leaves us, he will never leave us alone or forsake us. If we confess him, he will confess us before the Father in heaven.

Heavenly Father I am so thankful for the love you have shown to me in giving your Son to die for my sin. I am thankful to know that Jesus knows my name and every trial I face. Even more, that he walks beside me and holds my hand as I go through each storm of life. Thank you for the many freedoms I enjoy as a citizen of this country. Be with our leaders and give them wisdom to rule according to your will so we will continue to have peace. I ask your blessings on those who are taking treatments and facing surgeries. I pray in the name of Jesus my Lord.
