Daily Devotional: Psalms 138:1-8

Ps 138:1-8

1 I will praise you, O LORD, with all my heart; before the "gods" I will sing your praise. 2 I will bow down toward your holy temple and will praise your name for your love and your faithfulness, for you have exalted above all things your name and your word. 3 When I called, you answered me; you made me bold and stouthearted. 4 May all the kings of the earth praise you, O LORD, when they hear the words of your mouth. 5 May they sing of the ways of the LORD, for the glory of the LORD is great. 6 Though the LORD is on high, he looks upon the lowly, but the proud he knows from afar. 7 Though I walk in the midst of trouble, you preserve my life; you stretch out your hand against the anger of my foes, with your right hand you save me. 8 The LORD will fulfill his purpose for me; your love, O LORD, endures forever--do not abandon the works of your hands.

2 Peter 1:3-4

3 His divine power has given us everything we need for life and godliness through our knowledge of him who called us by his own glory and goodness. 4 Through these he has given us his very great and precious promises, so that through them you may participate in the divine nature and escape the corruption in the world caused by evil desires.

As the people of God we are to honor him, and in the process, we lead others to him for their salvation. The more devoted we are in our lives and the more we live according to his will, the more we find peace and happiness. When we begin to drift into the things of this world and let our hearts wander from God, we suffer from depression and shame and our minds are in constant turmoil.

This battle against sin is already won and the victory is ours because Jesus paid the price when he died on the cross for us. As he continues to forgive us, we know there is no condemnation and we are not subject to the law of sin and death. But at the same time there is the constant struggle we deal with daily as we seek to overcome the desire to sin. In this sense, our battle against sin is not over as long as we live on this earth. So we go through life holding the hand of Jesus our Lord, empowered by the Spirit, seeking to be holy while accepting his forgiveness.

Heavenly Father there is nothing that boggles my mind more than your power, your majesty and your glory but also your compassion and love for me. Your love endures forever! Forgive me when I fail to live up to your glory, empower and mold me by your Spirit. Help me imitate the humility, compassion and love shown by Jesus as he lived here on earth for me. Give me greater faith, wisdom and strength to be all you want me to become. Give your peace and comfort to those who are hurting and struggling. Use me to help them. In Jesus name.
