Daily Devotional: Psalms 135:15-21

Ps 135:15-21

15 The idols of the nations are silver and gold, made by the hands of men. 16 They have mouths, but cannot speak, eyes, but they cannot see; 17 they have ears, but cannot hear, nor is there breath in their mouths. 18 Those who make them will be like them, and so will all who trust in them. 19 O house of Israel, praise the LORD; O house of Aaron, praise the LORD; 20 O house of Levi, praise the LORD; you who fear him, praise the LORD. 21 Praise be to the LORD from Zion, to him who dwells in Jerusalem. Praise the LORD.

Rom 1:28-31

28 Furthermore, since they did not think it worthwhile to retain the knowledge of God, he gave them over to a depraved mind, to do what ought not to be done. 29 They have become filled with every kind of wickedness, evil, greed and depravity. They are full of envy, murder, strife, deceit and malice. They are gossips, 30 slanderers, God-haters, insolent, arrogant and boastful; they invent ways of doing evil; they disobey their parents; 31 they are senseless, faithless, heartless, ruthless.

Do you ever wonder how our society has reached the point where ungodly and wicked behavior is not only tolerated but is often extolled? In a recent debate over the subject of abortion it was said that it was “immoral” to deny the right of a woman to have an abortion at will. One of the things that God repeatedly called an abomination was the killing of babies and children as a sacrifice to the gods.

Paul says that greed is idolatry. Why? Because greed is the act of putting our own desires ahead of what God wants and putting our trust in things instead of putting our faith in him. When sexual pleasure without restraint comes ahead of obeying God and then killing the child that has come as a result, have we not made our desires our god? If David was condemned and punished for adultery, lying and murder, how can we escape the consequences of the same sins today?

When people refuse to acknowledge God as the only true God and refuse to thank him and submit to him as God, their lives will be fill with all kinds of ungodly behavior. This kind of mindset will only lead to strife, hatred, bitterness and more wickedness. When children are taught there is no God and no absolute morality, why should we be alarmed when they kill each other? Why not?

Heavenly Father, please be patient and merciful with our nation. Convict the hearts of our leaders to want to acknowledge you and want to follow your will. Give me a pure heart, deeper trust and a willing spirit to live for you, even when others follow after their worthless gods. Use me as a good influence in my small part of the universe so I can lead someone to Jesus. Give your peace and strength to those who are suffering and facing death. I pray in the name of Jesus.
