Daily Devotional: Psalms 119:9-16

Ps 119:9-16              Beth

9 How can a young man keep his way pure? By living according to your word. 10 I seek you with all my heart; do not let me stray from your commands. 11 I have hidden your word in my heart that I might not sin against you. 12 Praise be to you, O LORD; teach me your decrees. 13 With my lips I recount all the laws that come from your mouth. 14 I rejoice in following your statutes as one rejoices in great riches. 15 I meditate on your precepts and consider your ways. 16 I delight in your decrees; I will not neglect your word.

James 1:21-22

21 Therefore, get rid of all moral filth and the evil that is so prevalent and humbly accept the word planted in you, which can save you. 22 Do not merely listen to the word, and so deceive yourselves. Do what it says.

Solomon explained to his son that the wisdom from God and his word would lead to a good life. God made us and he knows what is best for us. James explains that the wisdom of this world leads to trouble, problems and chaos because it is based on greed and selfishness. The wisdom from above is based on the fear of the Lord and leads to peace because it is based on humility and love for others.

The only way we can know the will of God for us is to study his word. As we learn what it says, we meditate on it as we pray for wisdom. But there is no value in knowing what God says if we don’t put it into practice in our everyday lives. God knows what is best for us and how we can have good families, be good neighbors, good students as well as how we can be the best workers in our workplace.

We forget that God loves us and always wants what will bring peace into our lives, peace with him, with those around us and peace with ourselves. It is because of his love that we follow his will with gladness. Instead of being a chore to read his word, we find pleasure in it as we uncover his treasures of wisdom. Instead of seeing a list of rules that we are to follow and a list we have to leave alone, we see unfolded before us a way of living that gives us joy and hope. Following Jesus also gives us a spiritual family that supports us and encourages us daily.

Heavenly Father I am so glad that you have revealed your word to me in written form so I can study and come to know you better. I always need your wisdom to apply it to my life. I need your Spirit to work in me and guide me to become more like you each day. As I open my heart to you, fill me with your love so that it is evident to all and brings honor to you. I need your constant forgiveness as I seek to live by your will but fail. Give me greater faith so I will accept and know your forgiveness in my heart. Use me to encourage others. Help me never compromise your will for the things of this world. I pray in the name of Jesus my Lord.
