Daily Devotional: Psalms 118:22-29

Ps 118:22-29

22 The stone the builders rejected has become the capstone; 23 the LORD has done this, and it is marvelous in our eyes. 24 This is the day the LORD has made; let us rejoice and be glad in it. 25 O LORD, save us; O LORD, grant us success. 26 Blessed is he who comes in the name of the LORD. From the house of the LORD we bless you. 27 The LORD is God, and he has made his light shine upon us. With boughs in hand, join in the festal procession up to the horns of the altar. 28 You are my God, and I will give you thanks; you are my God, and I will exalt you. 29 Give thanks to the LORD, for he is good; his love endures forever.

Acts 4:8a, 10b-12

8 Then Peter, filled with the Holy Spirit, said to them:… It is by the name of Jesus Christ of Nazareth, whom you crucified but whom God raised from the dead, that this man stands before you healed. 11 He is "'the stone you builders rejected, which has become the capstone.' 12 Salvation is found in no one else, for there is no other name under heaven given to men by which we must be saved."

It seems that as David was led by the Spirit to write these Psalms, he had no idea that he was making many prophesies concerning the Christ who was to come. His primary application was for his day and probably all he understood. Yet in the wisdom of God, much of what was written by David and others was pointing the way to the coming son of David, the Savior of the world, Jesus our Lord.

While not everyone who serves the Lord is healthy and prosperous, it is true that living for God will bring us a joy and peace the world cannot know. Living by the wisdom that comes from above will help us avoid all kinds of problems, troubles and heartaches. It makes our lives easier, even in the face of trials.

Many (even among the Lord’s people) fail to realize just how valuable it is to be with their fellow Christians every opportunity that is afforded to them. We are not to go to church because we have to. We meet with other saints because we love to be with them and to join in with the worship and praise of our God. Doing this gives us strength. It offers us support to live right in a wicked world as we sing and pray with others. The study of God’s word is always a builder to our faith.

Heavenly Father you are good to me and your love endures forever. I praise you for your greatness, your majesty and your wisdom in guiding me in my life. I need your strength every day as I face the challenges of life. Forgive me when I fail and keep me from making excuses for my weakness or shortcomings.  Thank you for the many fellow Christians you have put in my life and for the encouragement I receive from them. Thank you for this nation and the freedoms we enjoy. Be with our leaders so that this will continue. I pray in the name of Jesus my Lord.
