Daily Devotional: Psalms 112:1-5

Ps 112:1-5

1 Praise the LORD. Blessed is the man who fears the LORD, who finds great delight in his commands. 2 His children will be mighty in the land; the generation of the upright will be blessed. 3 Wealth and riches are in his house, and his righteousness endures forever. 4 Even in darkness light dawns for the upright, for the gracious and compassionate and righteous man. 5 Good will come to him who is generous and lends freely, who conducts his affairs with justice.

2 Cor 3:8-11

9 If the ministry that condemns men is glorious, how much more glorious is the ministry that brings righteousness! 10 For what was glorious has no glory now in comparison with the surpassing glory. 11 And if what was fading away came with glory, how much greater is the glory of that which lasts!

One of the great lies of the devil is that serving God will make us miserable and to find real happiness, we must follow him and this world. After all, we only live once so we must get all the gusto we can get while we are here. Even John said that this world is passing away and all that is in it. Basing our lives on anything beyond what we see is foolishness to those who do not believe in eternity.

During the days of Hezekiah as king over Judah, there was a king who came to fight against them. He sent the people of Judah a message and said that no god of any nation had been able to stand against him so they should just give up. He was right to a point but what he failed to realize was that God was using him to carry out his plan and his might was not his own. God destroyed his army that night.

God is in control and our place is to trust him and follow his will. True happiness, real peace and eternal blessings are for those who trust God enough to follow his will in every part of their lives. The wisdom of this world is selfish and greedy but the will of God is that we be gracious, giving and kind. Satan wants us to be proud but only those who humble themselves will see God and inherit his kingdom. Real peace is only found when we come to God through faith in Jesus Christ and we have our sins forgiven. Being right with God is our only source of lasting joy.

Heavenly Father it is with joy that I give thanks for your wisdom in providing me a way of being saved from sin. Thank you for sending your Son as a sacrifice for my sin, and the sin of all the world. It is with true remorse that I realize how sinful I have been and how much I still fail to be what you want me to become. Fill me with your Spirit so my heart will be set on you and I will have the self-control I need to be more like you. Keep me from loving the things of this world and from being greedy. Open my heart to be compassionate toward others, motivating me to share what you have given me. I pray in the name of Jesus my Lord.
