Daily Devotional: Psalms 107:23-32

Ps 107:23-32

23 Others went out on the sea in ships; they were merchants on the mighty waters. 24 They saw the works of the LORD, his wonderful deeds in the deep. 25 For he spoke and stirred up a tempest that lifted high the waves. 26 They mounted up to the heavens and went down to the depths; in their peril their courage melted away. 27 They reeled and staggered like drunken men; they were at their wits' end. 28 Then they cried out to the LORD in their trouble, and he brought them out of their distress. 29 He stilled the storm to a whisper; the waves of the sea were hushed. 30 They were glad when it grew calm, and he guided them to their desired haven. 31 Let them give thanks to the LORD for his unfailing love and his wonderful deeds for men. 32 Let them exalt him in the assembly of the people and praise him in the council of the elders.

Matt 8:24-26

25 The disciples went and woke him, saying, "Lord, save us! We're going to drown!" 26 He replied, "You of little faith, why are you so afraid?" Then he got up and rebuked the winds and the waves, and it was completely calm.

We all face storms in our lives. They come when least expected and sweep over us like the mighty waves of the ocean. Our storm may be the death of one we love or the destruction of a broken relationship, the loss of our livelihood and the ensuing financial crisis and stress, a child in trouble with the law or someone slanders us and ruins our good name. We all have our storms at times.

God brought the storm to Jonah to teach him a lesson but he also made the great fish to rescue him from the sea. When the disciples of Jesus panicked because of the waves, Jesus slept in peace. It was not because he didn’t care but because he knew he could speak and stop the storm. The problem was their lack of faith.

When we face our storms in life, Jesus still has the power to still the waves and God can still bring about our rescue. It may not be in the way we would think or want, but God will always provide our way of escape if we trust him. We can in turn have our faith strengthened and we can learn valuable lessons. It is through storms that our faith is proven and we are brought to new heights with God.

Heavenly Father I am so thankful for the many times you have delivered me from the storms in my life. Even though they were not pleasant and were hard to bear at the time, you have taught me valuable lessons by them and I thank you for knowing what is best. Just as you so often showed your love and faithfulness to your people of old, you have demonstrated it to me in my life. Thank you for loving me and I praise you for your marvelous grace. I ask your blessings on those who are sick and taking treatments at this time. I pray in the name of Jesus.
