Daily Devotional: Psalms 106:19-27

Ps 106:19-27

19 At Horeb they made a calf and worshiped an idol cast from metal. 20 They exchanged their Glory for an image of a bull, which eats grass. 21 They forgot the God who saved them, who had done great things in Egypt, 22 miracles in the land of Ham and awesome deeds by the Red Sea. 23 So he said he would destroy them--had not Moses, his chosen one, stood in the breach before him to keep his wrath from destroying them. 24 Then they despised the pleasant land; they did not believe his promise. 25 They grumbled in their tents and did not obey the LORD. 26 So he swore to them with uplifted hand that he would make them fall in the desert, 27 make their descendants fall among the nations and scatter them throughout the lands.

Titus 1:15-16

15 To the pure, all things are pure, but to those who are corrupted and do not believe, nothing is pure. In fact, both their minds and consciences are corrupted. 16 They claim to know God, but by their actions they deny him. They are detestable, disobedient and unfit for doing anything good.

When Aaron made the calf for Israel, they ascribed their deliverance from Egypt to it. If they had been asked if they were rejecting the God of heaven, they probably would not have admitted it. They were just making an image that in their minds would represent God to them. However, they worshipped the idol and it was not God, it was their god made in the image of a bull. They rejected the only true God who had shown his power and freed them from slavery.

Just as God was not pleased and punished them for their idol worship, so today he is not pleased when we elevate anything to a god in our lives. For many it is the god of sports. This is first in their lives and rules all of their plans and actions. For others it is various forms of entertainment and the people who are a part of that world. I actually had a man tell me that the only god he worshipped was the green stuff in his wallet. Paul said that greed is idolatry. For many in our world, their god is getting ahead, making more, owning more, hoarding more; even when it is not needed and is to their own hurt. “You shall have no other gods before me.”

Heavenly Father help me keep you first in my life. Help me every day to trust you more and in so doing, love you more and seek to please you with my actions and my priorities. Thank you for all you have given me but don’t let the material things pull me away from you. It is such a wonderful thing to be able to know you as my God and to know Jesus as my Savior. Fill me with your joy and your peace as I learn to love others with the love you have shown to me. Give your wisdom and your guidance to the leaders of our nation. I humbly pray in the name of Jesus.
