Daily Devotional: Psalms 104:31-35

Ps 104:31-35

31 May the glory of the LORD endure forever; may the LORD rejoice in his works--32 he who looks at the earth, and it trembles, who touches the mountains, and they smoke. 33 I will sing to the LORD all my life; I will sing praise to my God as long as I live. 34 May my meditation be pleasing to him, as I rejoice in the LORD. 35 But may sinners vanish from the earth and the wicked be no more. Praise the LORD, O my soul. Praise the LORD.

Col 1:19-20

19 For God was pleased to have all his fullness dwell in him [Christ], 20 and through him to reconcile to himself all things, whether things on earth or things in heaven, by making peace through his blood, shed on the cross.

We may choose to ignore God, deny him or just treat him as trivial in our lives, but God is still God and He still is over all things. Regardless of our attitude toward God, it is still our lot to die and then face him in judgment. At that time, every knee will bow before Jesus and confess him as Lord. God has chosen to reveal himself to us in more ways than we can fathom in creation. He has also given us his word to explain to us the good news of how to escape the curse of sin and live with him in eternity. God is God and Jesus is Lord today and forever!

Because of sin the earth was cursed, along with all that inhabits the earth. The ground produced thorns, childbirth was made painful and hard work became necessary. Every kind of disease, evil and eventually death began to afflict mankind as its lot. But when Jesus comes again to receive his own, there will be a new heaven and a new earth in which there will be no curse. Paul says that all of creation itself will be liberated from its bondage to decay and will be brought into freedom. In the same context he says that all of creation eagerly waits for this glorious day. In this new heaven and new earth will be the glory of God as its light so there will be no need for the sun. What a wonderful day that will be!

So from our point of view it is easy to think of death as the worst that can happen to us. But in the reality of things, the death of one of God’s children is a blessed event because then we leave this place and go into his eternal home.

Heavenly Father I am so thankful for your love and the way you have provided for me to leave this world and to live with you in eternal bliss. While heaven is not in my ability to grasp, I can only imagine the glory of being in your presence and the opportunity to bow before your Son. Help me live every day of this life in a way that prepares me to be with you. Use me to lead others to you and to encourage those who are seeking to serve you. Open my eyes to the opportunities to help others with what you have given me. I pray in the name of Jesus my Lord.
