Daily Devotional: Psalms 95:6-11

Ps. 95:6-11

6 Come, let us bow down in worship, let us kneel before the LORD our Maker; 7 for he is our God and we are the people of his pasture, the flock under his care. Today, if you hear his voice, 8 do not harden your hearts as you did at Meribah, as you did that day at Massah in the desert, 9 where your fathers tested and tried me, though they had seen what I did. 10 For forty years I was angry with that generation; I said, "They are a people whose hearts go astray, and they have not known my ways." 11 So I declared on oath in my anger, "They shall never enter my rest."

Heb. 4:6-11

6 It still remains that some will enter that rest, and those who formerly had the gospel preached to them did not go in, because of their disobedience. 7 Therefore God again set a certain day, calling it Today, when a long time later he spoke through David, as was said before: "Today, if you hear his voice, do not harden your hearts." 8 For if Joshua had given them rest, God would not have spoken later about another day. 9 There remains, then, a Sabbath-rest for the people of God; 10 for anyone who enters God's rest also rests from his own work, just as God did from his. 11 Let us, therefore, make every effort to enter that rest, so that no one will fall by following their example of disobedience.

Since God is God, he is not compelled to agree with my thinking or conform to my understanding. His word is absolute truth so no amount of reasoning on my part will change it. Since he is creator, he is the source of authority and he is the final judge, it is my place to submit in humble obedience to him and his will.

Israel failed to understand and live this truth on their journey from Egypt to the land of rest that God had promised to give them. Because they failed to trust God and in so doing, failed to obey him, they were destroyed in the wilderness and were not allowed to enter the land and obtain the promise of God.

As with the children of Israel, we are God’s children today. Also as with them, we can miss our promised rest. While we will always be God’s children, he has the right to reject us and to disinherit us if we refuse to trust and obey him today.

Father and God help me always submit to your will. Keep me from being selfish and stubborn. As I face each new day, help me renew my allegiance to you and my determination to be what you want me to be. Use me in your way, doing what you want me to do. Lord, I want to live in a way that shows Jesus living in me but I want to use that example to help others and to give you all of the glory. I pray that you will be with your people all over the world that they will honor you by being at peace with one another. I pray in the name of Jesus, my Lord and King.
