Daily Devotional: Psalms 95:1-5

Ps. 95:1-5

1 Come, let us sing for joy to the LORD; let us shout aloud to the Rock of our salvation. 2 Let us come before him with thanksgiving and extol him with music and song. 3 For the LORD is the great God, the great King above all gods. 4 In his hand are the depths of the earth, and the mountain peaks belong to him. 5 The sea is his, for he made it, and his hands formed the dry land.

1 Peter 1:3-5

3 Praise be to the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ! In his great mercy he has given us new birth into a living hope through the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead, 4 and into an inheritance that can never perish, spoil or fade-kept in heaven for you, 5 who through faith are shielded by God's power until the coming of the salvation that is ready to be revealed in the last time.

We are here on earth to honor and praise God. The one thing that God cannot provide for himself is willing sacrifice on the part of mankind. The sacrifice that honors him is our trust in him as God and the offering of our lives and our lips. We show our faith in him when we obey him and follow his will. James says that faith without obedience is like a body without breath; it is useless and dead.

How can we know his will for us? It comes from reading, studying and knowing his revealed word – the Bible. Paul says that the word must be rightly divided, which means it must be properly interpreted and understood. This begins when we believe that the Bible is not only true but is the revelation of truth. This means that anything or anybody that contradicts God’s word is not true.

Another basic principle of interpretation and recognition of the word as truth is that a thing is right only if God says it is right. We may do things that we cannot prove are wrong but do we know if they are right? To be safe in understanding we should be able to show from scripture that what we believe and practice is what God says is right. The writer of Hebrews uses this reasoning to show that Jesus could not be an earthly priest because he was from the tribe of Judah and nothing is said in the Law about one being a priest from that tribe. God’s silence can prohibit.

Heavenly Father give me a greater desire to study and to know your word. Give me wisdom in understanding and applying it in my life. I want to just honor you and praise you in all I believe and all I do. Help me not rely on my own wisdom, which is too often controlled by my selfish desires. I know you are God and you know what is best for me in every part of my life so give me a yielding spirit and submissive heart. Use me to serve you by serving others. I ask your blessings on those who are sick, those who are taking treatments for cancer and other things. If it is your will, give them your healing. Increase my faith. In Jesus name.
