Daily Devotional: Psalms 91:9-16

Ps. 91:9-16

9 If you make the Most High your dwelling--even the LORD, who is my refuge--10 then no harm will befall you, no disaster will come near your tent. 11 For he will command his angels concerning you to guard you in all your ways; 12 they will lift you up in their hands, so that you will not strike your foot against a stone. 13 You will tread upon the lion and the cobra; you will trample the great lion and the serpent. 14 "Because he loves me," says the LORD, "I will rescue him; I will protect him, for he acknowledges my name. 15 He will call upon me, and I will answer him; I will be with him in trouble, I will deliver him and honor him. 16 With long life will I satisfy him and show him my salvation."

Matt. 4:5-7

5 Then the devil took him to the holy city and had him stand on the highest point of the temple. 6 "If you are the Son of God," he said, "throw yourself down. For it is written: "'He will command his angels concerning you, and they will lift you up in their hands, so that you will not strike your foot against a stone.'" 7 Jesus answered him, "It is also written: 'Do not put the Lord your God to the test.'"

Even the devil can quote scripture but beware, it will most often be quoted out of context or misapplied. Paul warned Timothy and Titus about false teachers who would come and deceive those who would believe them and their doctrines. We don’t need to be closed minded or refuse to even hear what someone is teaching but we must always check it with the written word of God to see if it is true.

It is easy to go to one of two extremes and neither is right for us. We can refuse to hear anything that is new or different from what we already believe or what we have always been taught. Just as bad is when we hear something new and accept it without examination or testing it with the scripture. Either of these can happen if we are not willing to study the Bible and think for ourselves.

While we should not believe something just because of some person (no matter how much we may respect them or what kind of degree they hold), we should not shy away from letting them or others help us in our understanding. Not one of us is so smart that we can’t be helped by the thinking of others on any subject.

Heavenly Father, I am so thankful for your love for me. Thank you for revealing your word so we can know how to serve you and live in this world. Help me know your will, understand it and then have the wisdom to apply it properly in every part of my life. While your truth does not change, I realize that my understanding may change as I learn and grow. Help me always speak your truth in love. Use me to lead others to you and to encourage those who are seeking to serve you. Thank you for those who have helped me know you. I pray in the name of Jesus.
