Daily Devotional: Psalms 76:1-6

Ps 76:1-6

1 In Judah God is known; his name is great in Israel. 2 His tent is in Salem, his dwelling place in Zion. 3 There he broke the flashing arrows, the shields and the swords, the weapons of war. Selah 4 You are resplendent with light, more majestic than mountains rich with game. 5 Valiant men lie plundered, they sleep their last sleep; not one of the warriors can lift his hands. 6 At your rebuke, O God of Jacob, both horse and chariot lie still.

Rev 1:4-6

4 John, To the seven churches in the province of Asia: Grace and peace to you from him who is, and who was, and who is to come, and from the seven spirits before his throne, 5 and from Jesus Christ, who is the faithful witness, the firstborn from the dead, and the ruler of the kings of the earth. To him who loves us and has freed us from our sins by his blood, 6 and has made us to be a kingdom and priests to serve his God and Father-to him be glory and power for ever and ever! Amen.

Who is this God we serve? He is King of kings and is Lord of lords. He rules all the nations of the earth and none is greater than he or over him. Every victory that is won on a battlefield or at the negotiating table is at his bidding. There is not a law passed in our congress without his knowledge and his allowing it to do so. He can overrule every decision of our Supreme Court. God is in control of all things.

But in his wisdom, he allows us to travel down a foolish road, even giving us the ability to reject him and his will for our lives. It is this rejection of the will of God for all of us that brings us the injustice, the crime and the hate we see in our world. The evil that prevails is not his will for us but is because we choose to allow the god of this world to lead us and influence us. This is true when we speak of ourselves as individuals or as a nation. But he rejects those who reject him.

In his wisdom and because of his love, he makes it possible for the most vile and wicked to turn to him and accept the salvation he offers in Jesus Christ. It is up to each of us to commit our lives to him in faith or to live for ourselves. He gives protection now and then eternal life for those who are his children in Christ.

O Lord God, creator of all things and ruler of all the earth, please look down on us with tender mercy and instill in me a pure heart and give me clean lips so I will praise you and honor your holy name. There are those who are suffering while I am ease. Please use me to encourage them and help them, but most of all give them your strength to trust you in all things. Help me focus my mind and dwell on things that are wholesome, right and holy instead of all the evil that is in the world around me. Forgive me when I fail. I pray in the name of Jesus.
