Daily Devotional: Psalms 68:21-27

Ps 68:21-27

21 Surely God will crush the heads of his enemies, the hairy crowns of those who go on in their sins. 22 The Lord says, "I will bring them from Bashan; I will bring them from the depths of the sea, 23 that you may plunge your feet in the blood of your foes, while the tongues of your dogs have their share." 24 Your procession has come into view, O God, the procession of my God and King into the sanctuary. 25 In front are the singers, after them the musicians; with them are the maidens playing tambourines. 26 Praise God in the great congregation; praise the LORD in the assembly of Israel. 27 There is the little tribe of Benjamin, leading them, there the great throng of Judah's princes, and there the princes of Zebulun and of Naphtali.

1 Cor 15:21-26

22 For as in Adam all die, so in Christ all will be made alive. 23 But each in his own turn: Christ, the firstfruits; then, when he comes, those who belong to him. 24 Then the end will come, when he hands over the kingdom to God the Father after he has destroyed all dominion, authority and power. 25 For he must reign until he has put all his enemies under his feet. 26 The last enemy to be destroyed is death.

In every war there are many battles. Some are but small skirmishes that play very little importance in the overall war while others are pivotal battles that determine the outcome of the war. So it is in life. We are in a spiritual war that spans our lifetime and it is made up of many small battles. Most days will have a small skirmish or two but don’t seem to determine our ultimate destiny.

As we learn to trust God for the skirmish, we are being made ready to trust him when the big battle does come. With a victory in each small skirmish, we are one step closer to victory in the overall war. That skirmish may be learning to hold our tongue instead of spreading gossip. It may be saying a kind word in response to someone being mean to us instead of replying in like manner. At times it is using the self-control that comes as we trust the Spirit in us to get done what needs to be done at the moment instead of putting it off until later. But each victory, no matter how big or small, brings us closer to God and to our eternal home.

Our Father in heaven, holy, reverend and majestic is your name! You are creator and sustainer of life. Your wisdom is seen in all of the physical universe, from the atoms of which all things are made, up to the galaxies in the heavens. But your most wonderful display of power and wisdom is seen in the way you have made it possible for me to be redeemed from sin and death in your Son, Jesus Christ. I am in constant need of your presence and your strength in my life. Give me wisdom to know what is best and fortitude to do it as I face each moment of the day. Give your peace to those who are troubled. I pray in the name of Jesus.
