Daily Devotional: Psalms 68:1-6

Ps 68:1-6

1 May God arise, may his enemies be scattered; may his foes flee before him. 2 As smoke is blown away by the wind, may you blow them away; as wax melts before the fire, may the wicked perish before God. 3 But may the righteous be glad and rejoice before God; may they be happy and joyful. 4 Sing to God, sing praise to his name, extol him who rides on the clouds--his name is the LORD--and rejoice before him. 5 A father to the fatherless, a defender of widows, is God in his holy dwelling. 6 God sets the lonely in families, he leads forth the prisoners with singing; but the rebellious live in a sun-scorched land.

Matt 11:28-30

28 "Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest. 29 Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. 30 For my yoke is easy and my burden is light."

Jesus does not promise that we will never see trouble while serving him. What he does promise is that he will give us peace in the midst of the storm, comfort in our sorrow and strength in our trials. Paul said that our present suffering in not worthy to be compared with the glory that is waiting for us in eternity. As the old hymn says, heaven will surely be worth it all.

God knows our every pain and is aware of all our anguish of heart. He knows if we are being ridiculed for our faith and when our kind hearts are tested by someone who is bitter and hateful. He sees when we want to be hateful or judgmental but choose to be compassionate instead. He also knows when we want to do what is right but give in to our weakness and fail to be like Jesus in our behavior.

It is in our weakest moments or in our deepest sorrow or when we feel pain the most that he is with us and gives his Spirit to strengthen, comfort and support and heal us. He is also with us when we trust in him and rejoice in overcoming the things we face in life. As we turn our lives over to Jesus as our Lord, we find he will never leave us or forsake us. Things will happen that we don’t understand but we trust him to use it for our good as we seek that eternal home with him.

Heavenly Father, I am thankful for your wonderful love. I thank you for your Spirit in my heart and my life. Thank you for your forgiveness that continues to cover my failings, weaknesses and sin. Help me learn from every experience in my life to be more like Jesus and to trust you more. Increase my faith, give me wisdom and strength to overcome every trial and temptation I face. I ask a special blessing on those who are serving you, even while being persecuted for their faith. Give your wisdom to the leaders of our nation. I pray in the name of my King Jesus.
