Daily Devotional: Psalms 64:1-5

Ps 64:1-5

1 Hear me, O God, as I voice my complaint; protect my life from the threat of the enemy. 2 Hide me from the conspiracy of the wicked, from that noisy crowd of evildoers. 3 They sharpen their tongues like swords and aim their words like deadly arrows. 4 They shoot from ambush at the innocent man; they shoot at him suddenly, without fear. 5 They encourage each other in evil plans, they talk about hiding their snares; they say, "Who will see them?"

2 Peter 3:3-7

3 First of all, you must understand that in the last days scoffers will come, scoffing and following their own evil desires. 4 They will say, "Where is this 'coming' he promised? Ever since our fathers died, everything goes on as it has since the beginning of creation." 5 But they deliberately forget that long ago by God's word the heavens existed and the earth was formed out of water and by water. 6 By these waters also the world of that time was deluged and destroyed. 7 By the same word the present heavens and earth are reserved for fire, being kept for the day of judgment and destruction of ungodly men.

From the earliest of times there have been scoffers who count themselves as being very wise. They reason that since they cannot see God that he does not exist. They overlook his creation and all the evidence that cannot be explained away or denied. Forgetting that God lives in eternity and is not bound by time, they reason that since things continue each day as they were yesterday, God and his promise of coming judgement is not true. In their folly they further reason that since sin is not punished immediately, it will not be in the future.

The mind of God is too wonderful for us to comprehend. His wisdom is infinite. He knows all things and understands all things because he designed and created all that exists. When the time is right, God does what he sees best. That is true for the world and all who live in it. It is true for the nations of the world and each of their rulers. It is true for the trials we face each day in our personal lives too. We can trust him to know our hearts and our desires and helps us as needed.

Lord God, all wise and all powerful, I thank you for allowing me to live in the time and place you have chosen. Help me in my every relationship to be what you want me to be. Give me wisdom to use my life to bring glory to you and to your name in all I do and all I say. Forgive me when I fail. Thank you for Jesus and the great sacrifice he made on my behalf. Use me to reach out to others and help them and encourage them to serve you. Give your strength to those who are serving you in spite of persecutions. I ask a special blessing on the rulers of our nation and those of other nations that peace can prevail. I pray in the name of Jesus.
