Daily Devotional: Psalms 55:16-21

Ps 55:16-21

16 But I call to God, and the LORD saves me. 17 Evening, morning and noon

I cry out in distress, and he hears my voice. 18 He ransoms me unharmed from the battle waged against me, even though many oppose me. 19 God, who is enthroned forever, will hear them and afflict them—Selah men who never change their ways and have no fear of God. 20 My companion attacks his friends; he violates his covenant. 21 His speech is smooth as butter, yet war is in his heart; his words are more soothing than oil, yet they are drawn swords.

Rom 8:31-32

31 What, then, shall we say in response to this? If God is for us, who can be against us? 32 He who did not spare his own Son, but gave him up for us all-how will he not also, along with him, graciously give us all things?

There are so many wicked people in the world. The world is filled with greed, with selfishness, bitterness, hatred and immorality of every kind. People turn on their friends, they lie, cheat and steal to get ahead or make a few dollars. While many (if not most) know these things are wrong, they revel in them and live without any shame or remorse. But this is nothing new. It was this same kind of jealousy that led Cain to kill his brother Abel and it has continued until today.

While we are to seek to turn people to God, many will willingly reject him. We are not to let the sin of others get us down or dampen our service to God. Jesus said we are to love our enemies, be kind to those who mistreat us by feeding them if they are hungry and giving them drink if thirsty. We are to return good to them when we are treated with evil, love the unloving and be forgiving to all, even those who don’t deserve it. We do right and leave others to God.

The wonderful thing about this is that God will take care of us. God has given us his love when we were in sin and were his enemies. He has given the supreme sacrifice on our behalf, his Son to die for our sin. When we come to him, he will not even think of deserting us because he has so much invested in us already. He will graciously provide all we need in life to make us ready for eternity.

Heavenly Father, you alone are God and deserving of praise. I thank you for Jesus, my Lord and my Savior. Fill me with your Holy Spirit so I will be molded into your image and become more like you in every way. Help me love others as you love me. Give me a heart of compassion instead of being judgmental. Fill me with the kindness that you have shown to me. Let me know the assurance of my salvation in Jesus Christ, not so I will ever want to sin but, so I will want to live for you and honor you in everything I do and say. I ask your blessings on those who are sick, who are hurting and grieving. I offer this prayer in the name of Jesus.
