Daily Devotional: Psalms 48:8-14

Ps. 48:8-14

8 As we have heard, so we have seen in the city of the Lord Almighty, in the city of our God: God makes her secure forever. 9 Within your temple, O God, we meditate on your unfailing love. 10 Like your name, O God, your praise reaches to the ends of the earth; your right hand is filled with righteousness. 11 Mount Zion rejoices, the villages of Judah are glad because of your judgments. 12 Walk about Zion, go around her, count her towers, 13 consider well her ramparts, view her citadels, that you may tell of them to the next generation. 14 For this God is our God for ever and ever; he will be our guide even to the end.

Eph. 1:13-14

13 And you also were included in Christ when you heard the message of truth, the gospel of your salvation. When you believed, you were marked in him with a seal, the promised Holy Spirit, 14 who is a deposit guaranteeing our inheritance until the redemption of those who are God’s possession—to the praise of his glory.

What God do you serve? Everyone serves a god or God of some kind. The gods of this world are varied and deceitful. It may be the god of materialism or the god of pleasure. Some serve the gods of self-indulgence or self-acclaim, also known as the god of pride. Some are so bold as to serve the devil without apology. Many deny the existence of God, but even these serve the gods of nature.

No person ever rises above the god he serves. This is what Paul says in the first chapter of the book of Romans when he says they went from bad to worse. In the end, because they did not see fit to acknowledge God or give thanks to him, he gave up on them and let them go headlong into their wickedness.

This God, the God who created all things, the God who takes care of us today, this God who controls the destiny of nations, this is our God for ever and ever. He will guide us on a daily basis and he will be with us to the end. For him to really be our God, he must be our Lord. He is our master and we must follow his teaching in every part of our lives. Jesus said if you love me, you will keep my commandments.

Lord God, creator and sustainer of life, giver of all good gifts, Holy and Majestic is your name above all the earth. With humility I come to you and open my heart to you, pouring out my fears, my doubts, my struggles. I need you every hour as I face the trials of life. Thank you for giving your Son so I can have forgiveness and be made righteous in your sight. Help me open my heart to your bidding; and fill me with your Spirit so I can become more like you each day. I am so thankful for the assurance of salvation and heaven you have given in your word. Help me live in a manner worthy of your calling. I pray in the name of Jesus my Lord.
