Daily Devotional: Psalms 46:1-7

Ps 46:1-7

1 God is our refuge and strength, an ever-present help in trouble. 2 Therefore we will not fear, though the earth give way and the mountains fall into the heart of the sea, 3 though its waters roar and foam and the mountains quake with their surging. Selah 4 There is a river whose streams make glad the city of God, the holy place where the Most High dwells. 5 God is within her, she will not fall; God will help her at break of day. 6 Nations are in uproar, kingdoms fall; he lifts his voice, the earth melts. 7 The LORD Almighty is with us; the God of Jacob is our fortress. Selah

Col 2:1-3

1 I want you to know how much I am struggling for you and for those at Laodicea, and for all who have not met me personally. 2 My purpose is that they may be encouraged in heart and united in love, so that they may have the full riches of complete understanding, in order that they may know the mystery of God, namely, Christ, 3 in whom are hidden all the treasures of wisdom and knowledge.

Paul said, “If God be for us, who can be against us?” The Old Testament is filled with stories of how one person or some very small army was able to overcome the great odds in battle. We read of David, as a lad, killing the great giant with only a sling and five small stones. Gideon was called to fight against the army of the Midianites, Amalekites and other eastern people. There were so many of them that it is said their camels could not be numbered but were as the sand of the sea. He started out with only 32,000 men but God said that was too many or they would claim the victory for themselves. Upon following God’s instructions, he was left with only 300 to go to battle. God gave them the victory.

No matter what we face in life, we can be more than conquerors in Jesus Christ our Lord. He has promised to empower us with the Spirit who lives in us. He has also promised to limit the power of Satan, our adversary. As we face the trials of everyday life, we are tempted to just give in or quit. At times we feel that we are about to drown in the problems, the hurt, the disappointment and the pain we endure. The LORD Almighty is with us; the God of Jacob is our fortress. Selah

Lord God Almighty, I come to you today with a humble heart filled with gratitude and thanksgiving. You have blessed me so much and in so many ways. Thank you for this country in which I live. Our leaders need your help and your wisdom to guide this nation, so please be with them. Help them to be able to find terms of peace with other nations. Guide the media to pursue peace and not to inflame the people against each other. In the middle of it all, help me become more like you every day and to lead others to you. Use me to teach and encourage. Forgive me when I sin against you. Fill me with love. I pray in the name of Jesus.
