Daily Devotional: Psalms 42:6b-11

Ps 42:6b-11

6b My soul is downcast within me; therefore, I will remember you from the land of the Jordan, the heights of Hermon--from Mount Mizar. 7 Deep calls to deep in the roar of your waterfalls; all your waves and breakers have swept over me. 8 By day the LORD directs his love, at night his song is with me--a prayer to the God of my life. 9 I say to God my Rock, "Why have you forgotten me? Why must I go about mourning, oppressed by the enemy?" 10 My bones suffer mortal agony as my foes taunt me, saying to me all day long, "Where is your God?" 11 Why are you downcast, O my soul? Why so disturbed within me? Put your hope in God, for I will yet praise him, my Savior and my God.

1 Cor 1:8-9

8 He will keep you strong to the end, so that you will be blameless on the day of our Lord Jesus Christ. 9 God, who has called you into fellowship with his Son Jesus Christ our Lord, is faithful.

Why do we become downcast? Why do we get depressed? Why should we mope around as though we have no hope for things to be better? As God’s children, we have the promise that he will always be with us and keep us. We may not see him or his working in our lives, but we can know he is doing what is best for us, every time and in every situation. At times, that which seems to be the problem that is taking us down, may be in fact, the very thing that is making us more like him and getting us ready for his work. We must put our hope in God and praise him.

If we only knew the mind of God. If we could see things from his perspective. He sees us in eternity – not our time. He knows what is best to get us ready for being with him forever and is not just guided by today. He tells us that training is not pleasant when it is happening, but he trains all whom he loves.

I have lived long enough to be able to look back and see how things that got me down, were in fact some of the things that built me up. Some of the worst “luck” opened some of the greatest doors of opportunity. When I was mistreated and maligned, I learned to trust God and forgive those who reviled me.

O Lord God, I am so thankful for your wisdom, your providence and your great love that is shown to me every day. Thank you for always being faithful to watch over me and protect me. Give me greater faith to face what must be faced each day and to still trust you. Forgive me when I doubt or question you. Lord, I don’t understand why so many reject you and your word. Use me, and others, to reach out to them and to lead as many as possible to you. I ask your wisdom for those who lead this country and other countries of the world that we my have peace as we seek to serve you and share your word. I pray in the name of Jesus.
