Daily Devotional: Psalms 40:1-4

Ps 40:1-4

1 I waited patiently for the LORD; he turned to me and heard my cry. 2 He lifted me out of the slimy pit, out of the mud and mire; he set my feet on a rock and gave me a firm place to stand. 3 He put a new song in my mouth, a hymn of praise to our God. Many will see and fear and put their trust in the LORD. 4 Blessed is the man who makes the LORD his trust, who does not look to the proud, to those who turn aside to false gods.

Jude 20-21

20 But you, dear friends, build yourselves up in your most holy faith and pray in the Holy Spirit. 21 Keep yourselves in God's love as you wait for the mercy of our Lord Jesus Christ to bring you to eternal life.

Nothing seems to be more difficult than waiting on the Lord. All too often, he just does not seem to be in nearly as big a hurry as we are. We have problems and trials that are mounting up in our lives and we pray but don’t see any response or action on the Lord’s part. It is easy for us to begin to doubt or think that he just really doesn’t care about what we are facing. Where is he when we need him?

But he does care! He does hear our prayers and he does respond. But his time and his sense of urgency is not guided by our frantic spirits. God knows the end before we see the beginning. He has plans that often take time – more time than we want to allow. The wonderful thing is that his timing is always right. He never makes mistakes. Someone has said we never read where God said “oops!”.

He is in control of all the circumstances that surround us and our lives, even when we, at times think they will overwhelm us. But we have his promise that he will never leave us or forsake us. He has said that he will never allow us to be tempted beyond what we are able to bear but he will provide a way of escape and the strength to endure. The only thing we control is our attitude, our trust and our faithfulness to him. He will take care of all the rest and work it for our good if we continue to love him and follow his will. Paul said we are to not worry about anything but in everything with thanksgiving make our requests known to God. He will answer and fill our hearts with peace that is beyond comprehension.

Lord God, giver of life and all good things, I am so thankful for all you have given me. There are more physical blessings than I can number and many more than I deserve. Thank you for this country and the freedoms we enjoy. Please be with our leaders and give them your wisdom. Help them see their need to look to you for guidance and to trust you for their success. Thank you for the many spiritual blessings; for allowing me to be your child and the many fellow Christians that fill my life with joy and encouragement. I humbly pray in the name of Jesus.
