Daily Devotional: Psalms 18:7-15

Ps 18:7-15

7 The earth trembled and quaked, and the foundations of the mountains shook;

they trembled because he was angry. 8 Smoke rose from his nostrils; consuming fire came from his mouth, burning coals blazed out of it. 9 He parted the heavens and came down; dark clouds were under his feet. 10 He mounted the cherubim and flew; he soared on the wings of the wind. 11 He made darkness his covering, his canopy around him--the dark rain clouds of the sky. 12 Out of the brightness of his presence clouds advanced, with hailstones and bolts of lightning. 13 The LORD thundered from heaven; the voice of the Most High resounded. 14 He shot his arrows and scattered the enemies, great bolts of lightning and routed them. 15 The valleys of the sea were exposed and the foundations of the earth laid bare at your rebuke, O LORD, at the blast of breath from your nostrils.

Rev 4:11

11 "You are worthy, our Lord and God, to receive glory and honor and power, for you created all things, and by your will they were created and have their being."

Those who are older remember the excitement when we first landed a rocket on the moon! We then sent people into orbit around the earth and eventually a manned rocket landed on the moon and people walked on the surface of it. What an accomplishment! The power of the rocket ships was so enormous that when it was tested, it rattled the windows in our school – 35 miles from the test site!

When we compare this to the tornadoes that plow destruction for miles at a time, with nothing left standing in its path, it pales in power. The force of the hurricanes that hit land, flood and destroy great buildings is almost beyond imagination. The earthquakes, the mudslides and other “natural” disasters demonstrate a power that is beyond our ability to defend against. What awesome power!

The God we serve spoke and all we know as heaven and earth came into being with all the forces of “nature” that both destroy and sustain us. The vast heavens and the bodies that move in them are just dots in a small work from the mind of our God! Yet, this mighty and awesome God knows each of us and loves us!

Lord God, I need to be reminded of your greatness, your majesty and your power from time to time. As I ponder your great wisdom and the designs you placed in our creation I stand in awe. Yet, the greatest show of wisdom is the way you have made it possible for me, one who has sinned against you, to live with you in your holiness in eternity. Thank you for loving me enough to send your Son to die for  my sin, even though I have never done anything to deserve your favor. Help me be committed to your will and serving you. I pray in the name of Jesus.
