Daily Devotional: Psalms 6:6-10

Ps 6:6-10

6 I am worn out from groaning; all night long I flood my bed with weeping and drench my couch with tears. 7 My eyes grow weak with sorrow; they fail because of all my foes. 8 Away from me, all you who do evil, for the LORD has heard my weeping. 9 The LORD has heard my cry for mercy; the LORD accepts my prayer. 10 All my enemies will be ashamed and dismayed; they will turn back in sudden disgrace.

John 16:33

33 "I have told you these things, so that in me you may have peace. In this world you will have trouble. But take heart! I have overcome the world."

What a joy to be able to know that Jesus has overcome the world. This world is filled with all kinds of trouble, turmoil, pain, sickness, death and disappointments and also sin and temptations to sin. It doesn’t matter how much we seek to serve the Lord, we still face all of these things in our lives. But we serve a Savior who has been through this life, faced all of these things and has overcome. He never committed a single sin but stayed true to his mission to do the will of God. He has now gone to the Father in heaven and is awaiting our arrival to be with him.

But when all of these things hit us, it is easy to forget that Jesus is here beside us with extended hand wanting to help us, lead us and even carry us through. We try to find our own answers and control our own destiny by doing it all ourselves instead of turning it over to the one who has already overcome. Jesus said “Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest.

When we go to God in prayer, he hears our cry. He not only hears us but he has promised to answer us every time. Since he knows what is really best for us and what we actually need in every situation, he does not always answer with a “yes” or give us just what we ask for or in the time frame we think is necessary. At times this makes it difficult for us to see him at work and so we begin to doubt and even become impatient instead of waiting on him. We must always remember his words when he said “Take heart, I have overcome the world.”

Heavenly Father, forgive my impatience and my tendency to run ahead of you and trying to take care of my own problems. Give me peace in the midst of a world that is filled with turmoil. Give me joy in the face of grief and sickness. Give me strength when I am weak. Fill me with your love when I am angry or feel I have been done wrong. As I make decisions, I need your wisdom and guidance. Most of all, increase my faith. Use me to help others trust you, serve you and live for you as they face the same things I face each day – and even more. I want to be like Jesus and I know I fail. Forgive me. I humbly pray in his holy name.
