Daily Devotional: Psalms 1:1-6

Ps 1:1-6

1 Blessed is the man who does not walk in the counsel of the wicked or stand in the way of sinners or sit in the seat of mockers. 2 But his delight is in the law of the LORD, and on his law he meditates day and night. 3 He is like a tree planted by streams of water, which yields its fruit in season and whose leaf does not wither. Whatever he does prospers. 4 Not so the wicked! They are like chaff that the wind blows away. 5 Therefore the wicked will not stand in the judgment, nor sinners in the assembly of the righteous. 6 For the LORD watches over the way of the righteous, but the way of the wicked will perish.

James 1:22-25

22 Do not merely listen to the word, and so deceive yourselves. Do what it says. 23 Anyone who listens to the word but does not do what it says is like a man who looks at his face in a mirror 24 and, after looking at himself, goes away and immediately forgets what he looks like. 25 But the man who looks intently into the perfect law that gives freedom, and continues to do this, not forgetting what he has heard, but doing it-he will be blessed in what he does.

Jesus said we are to seek first the kingdom of God and his righteousness. He also said the first and foremost command is to love the Lord God with all the heart, with all the soul and with all the mind. But how do we really do this in our day to day lives? Does this mean we go around quoting Bible verses all day or giving a blessing in every sentence we utter? How do we put God first?

To put God first means we are doing the best we can to know his will. This means we put a priority on studying the Bible – both to know the facts that are in it but also to know what they mean and how we apply them in our lives. Jesus asked a lawyer of his day: “what does the scripture say and how does it read to you?” He was saying, what does this mean? The writer of Hebrews says we become mature spiritually by exercising our senses to discern good and evil.

This allows us to be the very best parents, children, workers and neighbors we can be. In doing this we show forth the word of God in our lives and lead others to the Lord. Blessed is the one whose delight is in the law of the Lord day and night.

O Lord God, thank you for the opportunity of knowing you and knowing your will as you have revealed to me in your word. Thank you for the freedom to worship you without fear of being persecuted. I ask your blessings on those who are sick and face pain and suffering every day. Give them your comfort and your peace and be with those who are tending their needs. Give them strength. I thank you for the health I enjoy and ask that I be able to use all you have given me in every way to your glory. I pray in the name of Jesus my Lord and Savior.
