Daily Devotional: Psalms 140:1-5

Ps 140:1-5

1 Rescue me, O LORD, from evil men; protect me from men of violence, 2 who devise evil plans in their hearts and stir up war every day. 3 They make their tongues as sharp as a serpent's; the poison of vipers is on their lips. Selah

4 Keep me, O LORD, from the hands of the wicked; protect me from men of violence who plan to trip my feet. 5 Proud men have hidden a snare for me; they have spread out the cords of their net and have set traps for me along my path. Selah

2 Tim 4:16-18

16 At my first defense, no one came to my support, but everyone deserted me. May it not be held against them. 17 But the Lord stood at my side and gave me strength, so that through me the message might be fully proclaimed and all the Gentiles might hear it. And I was delivered from the lion's mouth. 18 The Lord will rescue me from every evil attack and will bring me safely to his heavenly kingdom. To him be glory for ever and ever. Amen.

David was attacked physically by the enemies of Israel. Paul was arrested for preaching the gospel to a lost world. Both were doing the will of God to spread his kingdom in their day and both were being persecuted for their faith. The common thread in this is that they turned to God and trusted him to deliver them.

As we face trials in our lives today (and we all do) we must turn to God and trust him to deliver us. When life gets difficult, it would be so easy to just blame God or convince ourselves that he really doesn’t care about us but this is not true. God has promised us that he will always walk beside us and hold us so that we need never fall. He knows our limitations and will never allow us to be tempted beyond what we are able to bear but will always provide a way of escape for us.

David began his life as the 8th son of a humble sheep farmer named Jesse near the town of Bethlehem. He learned at an early age to trust God. Paul seems to have grown up in more affluent circumstances but was zealous for God from a very early age. We may not know a lot about their backgrounds but we find strength to endure from the examples of faith that they left for us to follow.

O Lord God, my heavenly Father, I am so thankful for your constant care and the love you show to me. When I measure my life against your perfection, I see how much I fail and yet you are willing to continue to forgive me as I seek to serve you in all things. As I seek to participate in your divine nature, help me never forget that I am what I am because of your grace. Use me in my small world to serve you the very best I can, in the way that pleases you. Be with those who have lost loved ones and give them your peace and comfort. I pray in the name of Jesus.
