Daily Devotional: Psalms 134:1-3

Ps 134:1-3

1 Praise the LORD, all you servants of the LORD who minister by night in the house of the LORD. 2 Lift up your hands in the sanctuary and praise the LORD. 3 May the LORD, the Maker of heaven and earth, bless you from Zion.

2 Tim 2:20-21

20 In a large house there are articles not only of gold and silver, but also of wood and clay; some are for noble purposes and some for ignoble. 21 If a man cleanses himself from the latter, he will be an instrument for noble purposes, made holy, useful to the Master and prepared to do any good work.

For the last many years I have worked in a metal stamping company. When a die is made and set in a press, each part that comes out is identical. If it is not, then there is a problem that has to be fixed. In his wisdom, God chose to not use a “cookie cutter” method of making mankind. In fact, every individual on earth is unique and different from all others. We are made special by God.

Not only do we all look different but we each have our own abilities, our own strengths and our own weaknesses. For this reason we are not to measure our abilities by that of others. What God expects from us is that we do the best we can with what he has given us. The wise man said that whatever our hands find to do, do it with all our might. Paul often wrote that we are to be diligent or make every effort to do the work that God has planned for our lives.

So in the temple there was a High Priest who had special duties. There were many priests under him who took their turns doing many things in the worship to God. But there were some whose job was to clean up or set things in order. There were Levites who played instruments and sang while some carried things from one place to another but each was to do his work to the best of their ability.

Every facet of the work that God has given his people is to be done. It may be that what we can do is spend time with those who are shut in due to infirmities. Our task may be to provide meals for those who need them or to mow a yard or paint a house. Our ability may be to teach a Bible class, preach a sermon or conduct home Bible studies. Each is a part of the work of the Lord and is important.

O Lord God, Creator and sustainer of all things, I am thankful that you have made me in a special way for your service. Open my eyes to see your will for me and to use all you have given me to your glory. Keep me from making excuses but open my heart to allow your Spirit to mold me into all you want me to become. Lord, I do not want to forget those who have suffered so much from the recent storms and I pray that you will be with them. Help me be willing to do all I can to be of assistance to them in their needs. I pray in the name of Jesus.
