Daily Devotional: Psalms 106:28-33

Ps 106:28-33

28 They yoked themselves to the Baal of Peor and ate sacrifices offered to lifeless gods; 29 they provoked the LORD to anger by their wicked deeds, and a plague broke out among them. 30 But Phinehas stood up and intervened, and the plague was checked. 31 This was credited to him as righteousness for endless generations to come. 32 By the waters of Meribah they angered the LORD, and trouble came to Moses because of them; 33 for they rebelled against the Spirit of God, and rash words came from Moses' lips.

1 Cor 10:6-10

6 Now these things occurred as examples to keep us from setting our hearts on evil things as they did. 7 Do not be idolaters, as some of them were; as it is written: “The people sat down to eat and drink and got up to indulge in pagan revelry.”   8 We should not commit sexual immorality, as some of them did-and in one day twenty-three thousand of them died. 9 We should not test the Lord, as some of them did-and were killed by snakes. 10 And do not grumble, as some of them did-and were killed by the destroying angel.

The more we recognize the glory of God and revere him and his holy word, the more we will want to be like him. If we ever begin to make God in our image, we will fail to keep his word and do his will. In our pea sized thinking we seek to put God in our box and make him fit in our understanding. God is so much bigger than any of us and even greater than all of his creation. In doing this we turn from the God of heaven to our own gods that satisfy our desires and whims.

This kind of thinking begins when we think too highly of ourselves. This is the root of humanism and all of the evil it brings to our society. It was this sin that caught David when he numbered the people. This was the sin of Nebuchadnezzar before he lost his mind and became as a beast, eating grass in the fields. This is the sin of the fool today who says there is no God and no judgment to come.

Minimizing the greatness and majesty of God is also seen when one uses the name of Lord in vain in the form of euphemisms and slang expressions of God, of Jesus and even heaven or hell. God is holy and majestic is his name!

Lord God, as I recognize my own unworthiness I come before you with great fear and trembling. Yet, in the name of Jesus I know I can approach you and your great throne in boldness with the assurance you will hear me and answer my prayer. I need you every hour and ask you to empower me with your Spirit to become all you want me to be. Forgive my failures and help me learn from them. Keep me from ever uttering any words from my mouth that would demean you or your holy name. Give your peace to the troubled. I pray in the name of Jesus.
