Daily Devotional: Psalms 104:24-30

Ps 104:24-30

24 How many are your works, O LORD! In wisdom you made them all; the earth is full of your creatures. 25 There is the sea, vast and spacious, teeming with creatures beyond number--living things both large and small. 26 There the ships go to and fro, and the leviathan, which you formed to frolic there. 27 These all look to you to give them their food at the proper time. 28 When you give it to them, they gather it up; when you open your hand, they are satisfied with good things. 29 When you hide your face, they are terrified; when you take away their breath, they die and return to the dust. 30 When you send your Spirit, they are created, and you renew the face of the earth.

Acts 17:25-28

26 From one man he made every nation of men that they should inhabit the whole earth; and he determined the times set for them and the exact places where they should live. 27 God did this so that men would seek him and perhaps reach out for him and find him, though he is not far from each one of us. 28 ‘For in him we live and move and have our being.’ As some of your own poets have said, ‘We are his offspring.’

God alone gives us life. It is he who forms the baby in the womb and gives life and breath to the child that is born. We each are made in his image, pure and sinless and so full of potential and yet we, by our own choosing, sin against him and face the curse of death. But just as death entered the world by the sin of Adam and Eve, life has come by the Son of God who loves us and gave himself for us.

But we see more of the power of God described in our Psalm when we see that it is God who provides for the creatures of the earth, the sea and the sky. He gives them their time and place to live and when the time comes, he takes away their life. But he also sends his Spirit to give life to the newborn creatures and animals in their time. Scientists may be able to duplicate and transfer life from one being to another but it is only God who can give a new life – both to people and the animals of his world. How foolish to deny our God and his ways!

O God, my heavenly Father, I am so thankful for the wisdom in all you have shown in your creation in more ways than any of us can even see or know. The wisdom of how you make it possible for me to be your child and to have your promise of eternal life is magnificent in every way! Thank you for loving me and extending your mercy to me when I don’t deserve anything but punishment from you. Give me greater faith, richer wisdom and more determination to use the strength from your Spirit to be all you want me to be. Forgive me when I fail. Use me to lead others to you and to your saving grace. I pray in the name of Jesus.
