Daily Devotional: Psalms 95:6-11

Ps 95:6-11

6 Come, let us bow down in worship, let us kneel before the LORD our Maker; 7 for he is our God and we are the people of his pasture, the flock under his care. Today, if you hear his voice, 8 do not harden your hearts as you did at Meribah,as you did that day at Massah in the desert, 9 where your fathers tested and tried me, though they had seen what I did. 10 For forty years I was angry with that generation; I said, “They are a people whose hearts go astray, and they have not known my ways.” 11 So I declared on oath in my anger, “They shall never enter my rest.”

After quoting from the above passage, the writer of Hebrews says in Heb 3:12-14

12 See to it, brothers, that none of you has a sinful, unbelieving heart that turns away from the living God. 13 But encourage one another daily, as long as it is called Today, so that none of you may be hardened by sin's deceitfulness. 14 We have come to share in Christ if we hold firmly till the end the confidence we had at first.

In the context of the passage in Hebrews, the writer is showing that Moses was faithful in God’s house but Jesus has been found worthy of greater honor than Moses, just as the builder of a house has greater honor than the house itself. He then shows that as the children of God we are to keep our faith in Jesus and we are to encourage each other along the way.

Satan is going to use every tool at his disposal to try to get us to not serve God but to indulge in every form of sin instead. Even when he tempted Jesus on earth, he did not quit with just one temptation but tried three different things. Then it says he left Jesus until an opportune time. That means he came back again to try to get Jesus to sin. He does the same to us today. When one temptation does not get us, he will try something else and keep trying until we finally give in.

Then when we do sin, he will try to convince us that it really is not sin but that we just made a mistake or that it is really not even wrong. If he can get us to repeat our sin, we become hardened to it until we are caught up by it. As James tells us, we should confess our faults to each other and pray for each other.

O Lord, thank you for your wonderful love shown to me in giving your Son to die for my sin. Help me stay away from all sin and give me a pure heart. Instill in me a steadfast spirit to live for you and remain faithful to your will. Thank you for the physical blessings I enjoy each day. Use me to help others physically as I have the opportunity to do so and also use me to help encourage others as they seek to do your will. I am thankful for the many friends you have put in my life that help me and encourage me in so many ways. I pray in the name of Jesus my Lord.
