Daily Devotional: Psalms 95:1-5

Ps 95:1-5

1 Come, let us sing for joy to the LORD; let us shout aloud to the Rock of our salvation. 2 Let us come before him with thanksgiving and extol him with music and song. 3 For the LORD is the great God, the great King above all gods. 4 In his hand are the depths of the earth, and the mountain peaks belong to him. 5 The sea is his, for he made it, and his hands formed the dry land.

1 Tim 6:13-16

13 In the sight of God, who gives life to everything, and of Christ Jesus, who while testifying before Pontius Pilate made the good confession, I charge you 14 to keep this command without spot or blame until the appearing of our Lord Jesus Christ, 15 which God will bring about in his own time-God, the blessed and only Ruler, the King of kings and Lord of lords, 16 who alone is immortal and who lives in unapproachable light, whom no one has seen or can see. To him be honor and might forever. Amen.

In our world today there are many who claim the authority of God. Whether it is the Grand Dragon of the KKK, the Grand Potentate of the Lodge or the Pope of the Roman church, there are many religious and quasi-religious organizations that wrest the authority that belongs only to God and to his Son. One of the contrasts that stands out is that while they claim authority to direct the affairs and lives of others and to decree on behalf of God (or god), they do not have the inherent power that belongs to God and to his Son. The only power they have is what is given them by their followers and the physical efforts they can put forth.

Our God is Lord of lords, he is King of Kings and he alone is the Grand Potentate of the universe and all time. Jesus is declared with power to be the Son of God and claims for himself the power of deity. God the Father, God the Son and God the Spirit make up the triune God of the Bible and it was their spoken word that brought all things into existence. Jesus calmed the stormy sea with just a short command for the waves to be still. He healed the sick, gave sight to the blind, made the deaf hear and raised the dead. We belong to him and all things that exist belong to him as well. So we trust him and we serve him as LORD!

O LORD, my LORD, how excellent is your name in all the earth. You alone have created all things and you alone have the power to control all things. I know that the person who is declared by mankind to be the “most powerful” man or woman only has the very limited power you have given them and that you can take it away from them just as easily as you gave it. I ask a special blessing on those who are battling cancer, dementia, Parkinson’s, Lou Garran’s disease and so many others that ravish the bodies of those I love. I pray in the name of Jesus.
