Daily Devotional: Psalms 89:1-6

Ps 89:1-6

1 I will sing of the LORD's great love forever; with my mouth I will make your faithfulness known through all generations. 2 I will declare that your love stands firm forever, that you established your faithfulness in heaven itself. 3 You said, "I have made a covenant with my chosen one, I have sworn to David my servant, 4 'I will establish your line forever and make your throne firm through all generations.'" Selah 5 The heavens praise your wonders, O LORD, your faithfulness too, in the assembly of the holy ones. 6 For who in the skies above can compare with the LORD? Who is like the LORD among the heavenly beings?

Matt 1:1-17

1 A record of the genealogy of Jesus Christ the son of David, the son of Abraham: 2a Abraham was the father of Isaac,… 6a and Jesse the father of King David… 16 and Jacob the father of Joseph, the husband of Mary, of whom was born Jesus, who is called Christ. 17 Thus there were fourteen generations in all from Abraham to David, fourteen from David to the exile to Babylon, and fourteen from the exile to the Christ.

The genealogies do matter. It is important to understand that every part of the Bible is important. It is in these lists that we see the fulfillment of many of the prophecies made in the Old Testament. When Paul wrote to the Corinthians, he told them that the gospel he preached, by which they were saved if they remained faithful was “according to the scriptures” in every way.

Jesus is the king eternal on the throne of David. While many are still looking (as did many of Israel in the days of Jesus) for an earthly king and kingdom, this is not to be. Jesus said that his kingdom was not of this world or else his disciples would fight. When he was being taken by the temple guard, he would not even let Peter use his sword. In fact, he healed the only person that Peter had injured in this skirmish. He also said he had come to the earth for this moment.

Paul says we have been transferred from the kingdom of darkness, the kingdom of this world to the kingdom of the dear Son of God. The kingdom of Christ is his church. We, as the saved, belong to him and are under his rule today.

Heavenly Father, I am thankful for your wisdom in providing proof of your will by the many prophecies that are made and fulfilled in your word. I also thank you that so many of these and their fulfillment are explained to us. Help me submit every part of my life to Jesus as my Lord and as my king. I am thankful that he is the King of Kings so that I don’t have to be stressed about the rulers of the many nations on earth today or even tomorrow. Help me in my battle with the spiritual forces so I can become all you want me to be. I pray in the name of Jesus.
