Daily Devotional: Psalms 84:8-12

Ps 84:8-12

8 Hear my prayer, O LORD God Almighty; listen to me, O God of Jacob. Selah 9 Look upon our shield, O God; look with favor on your anointed one. 10 Better is one day in your courts than a thousand elsewhere; I would rather be a doorkeeper in the house of my God than dwell in the tents of the wicked. 11 For the LORD God is a sun and shield; the LORD bestows favor and honor; no good thing does he withhold from those whose walk is blameless. 12 O LORD Almighty, blessed is the man who trusts in you.

1 John 3:2-3

2 Dear friends, now we are children of God, and what we will be has not yet been made known. But we know that when he appears, we shall be like him, for we shall see him as he is. 3 Everyone who has this hope in him purifies himself, just as he is pure.

To be able to serve God is not a duty or a chore but it is a privilege and an honor to be allowed to come before him and pay him homage. Whatever we can do to bring glory to his name and to serve him as the only God of the universe brings us tremendous joy. As with a couple deeply in love who seek ways to please each other and serve each other, so it is in an even more meaningful way as we serve our God. Worship pleases him and fills our hearts with joy and peace.

This should not surprise us because Jesus served others. He emphasized this with his disciples on the night he was betrayed. He took the basin of water and washed their feet; the lowest act of a common servant. He then explained to them that they were to serve one another in his name.

When he portrayed a judgment scene to his followers, he based judgment on how each person had served others. Had they fed him when he was hungry, clothed him when he was naked or visited him when he was sick or in prison? They asked when they had seen him sick, hungry or in prison and He explained to them that in as much as they had done this (or not done it) for others, they had done it (or not done it) for him. Going to church and worshipping God is serving him but this is only a small part of our service to him. We serve him as we serve others.

Heavenly Father, I am so thankful that I have the privilege of serving you. It is an honor to be able to come before the throne of the God of the universe and to know that you know me as your child and hear me. Thank you for loving me and allowing me to serve you. Open my heart to opportunities to serve you by serving those around me. As a part of serving others, I lift up those today who are hurting or taking treatments or getting over surgeries and ask for your healing hand to be on them. Give strength to the weak. I pray in the name of Jesus.
