Daily Devotional: Psalms 78:9-16

Ps 78:9-16

9 The men of Ephraim, though armed with bows, turned back on the day of battle; 10 they did not keep God's covenant and refused to live by his law. 11 They forgot what he had done, the wonders he had shown them. 12 He did miracles in the sight of their fathers in the land of Egypt, in the region of Zoan. 13 He divided the sea and led them through; he made the water stand firm like a wall. 14 He guided them with the cloud by day and with light from the fire all night. 15 He split the rocks in the desert and gave them water as abundant as the seas; 16 he brought streams out of a rocky crag and made water flow down like rivers.

Acts 7:35-37

35 “This is the same Moses whom they had rejected with the words, 'Who made you ruler and judge?' He was sent to be their ruler and deliverer by God himself, through the angel who appeared to him in the bush. 36 He led them out of Egypt and did wonders and miraculous signs in Egypt, at the Red Sea and for forty years in the desert. 37 “This is that Moses who told the Israelites, 'God will send you a prophet like me from your own people.'

The Jewish people have always been proud of their heritage and rightly so. They were formed as a nation of people by the will of God, according to the promises he had made to their ancestors. Their early formation was first as a favored family in the land of Egypt and then later as an ethnic group who were subjected to slavery by the Pharaoh of their day. God delivered them from their bondage with a mighty hand and destroyed the Egyptians in the process. He held back the water of the Red Sea and allowed them to cross over on dry land.

The miracles of God through Moses became well known throughout the other nations of the world. Many years later when the spies went into Jericho, Rahab told them that the people of Canaan were deathly afraid of Israel because they had heard the stories of how God had delivered them and protected them with his mighty miracles. If everyone else knew these things, there was no excuse for the people of Israel to not know them and believe in God.

We have far greater evidence of God in our lives through Jesus Christ and as his people today so how can we ever doubt he will be with us and protect us?

Heavenly Father, I thank you for your care and protection over me, my family and all of your people. Give me greater faith to live for you and never doubt your working in my life. Forgive me when I fail to be all you want me to be. I ask a special blessing on our country as we begin a transition of leadership. Give our leaders your wisdom to guide us. I pray in the name of Jesus my King.
