Daily Devotional: Psalms 71:1-8

Ps 71:1-8

1 In you, O LORD, I have taken refuge; let me never be put to shame. 2 Rescue me and deliver me in your righteousness; turn your ear to me and save me. 3 Be my rock of refuge, to which I can always go; give the command to save me, for you are my rock and my fortress. 4 Deliver me, O my God, from the hand of the wicked, from the grasp of evil and cruel men. 5 For you have been my hope, O Sovereign LORD, my confidence since my youth. 6 From birth I have relied on you; you brought me forth from my mother's womb. I will ever praise you. 7 I have become like a portent to many, but you are my strong refuge. 8 My mouth is filled with your praise, declaring your splendor all day long.

John 14:27

27 Peace I leave with you; my peace I give you. I do not give to you as the world gives. Do not let your hearts be troubled and do not be afraid.

As we approach the Thanksgiving season, we should realize how unique it is in the world to have a day set aside to be thankful to God. While much negative talk can be said about our society and the immorality that is so rampant, as the children of God we can be thankful that we are afforded the opportunity to have a special day to set aside our normal routines to recognize that God is still in control and it is he who has blessed us so much.

In the minds of many who say they believe in God, their perception is a god who is made in their image, thinks as they think and yields to their wishes. For others God is just there in times of trouble to rescue them from their dangers but he is forgotten when they don’t see a need. Then there are those who see God as some power that is out to make their life miserable by not allowing them to experience all the things they think will give them joy.

We need to be thankful that God is who he is and is the kind of God he is. God is love. God is patient. God is kind. But he is a jealous God and is a consuming fire for those who refuse to acknowledge him as God. He has revealed himself to us in his word and also in his Son who is his exact image. He has made it possible for us to live with him, in his very presence in eternity. Praise God and thank him!

Thank you Lord for loving me. Thank you for making me your child. It is with deep humility that I approach you as the Creator and God of the universe but also with boldness in Jesus your Son, my Savior, my Lord, my brother and my friend. I am so thankful that you have made yourself known to me and so I ask you to be with me and give me a greater desire to be more like you, the wisdom to understand your word and apply it in my life and strength to have self-control to live for you. I do give you thanks in all things and praise you my God. I pray in Jesus name.
