Daily Devotional: Psalms 69:1-5

Ps 69:1-5

1 Save me, O God, for the waters have come up to my neck. 2 I sink in the miry depths, where there is no foothold. I have come into the deep waters; the floods engulf me. 3 I am worn out calling for help; my throat is parched. My eyes fail, looking for my God. 4 Those who hate me without reason outnumber the hairs of my head; many are my enemies without cause, those who seek to destroy me. I am forced to restore what I did not steal. 5 You know my folly, O God; my guilt is not hidden from you.

Heb. 4:12-13

12 For the word of God is living and active. Sharper than any double-edged sword, it penetrates even to dividing soul and spirit, joints and marrow; it judges the thoughts and attitudes of the heart. 13 Nothing in all creation is hidden from God's sight; everything is uncovered and laid bare before the eyes of him to whom we must give account.

I once knew of a school principal who would hide behind doors and lockers in the hallway to try to catch someone breaking the rules. He was always watching with the thought in mind of making somebody pay for doing wrong. God does not see or watch us with that kind of motive.

He is ever watching and is all-seeing but it is with the idea and motive of being ready to help us. It is like when a toddler is beginning to walk and we are right behind them with outstretched hands. When our youngster begins to try to ride a bicycle, we run along and watch for every possible impending hazard or failure on their part but only to protect, never to accuse or condemn. While God does hold us accountable for our actions, it is with mercy and the offer of help to free us from our guilt of sin. He wants everyone to be saved in eternity.

So when life tumbles in on us with problems or when we face temptations that are so strong, we know God is with us and wants to help us. Even when we have failed the test and have given in to that great temptation, he is willing to pick us up, clean away our guilt and hold our hand the rest of the way. When it seems the entire world is against us, God is with us. If he is for us, who can be against us?!

Heavenly Father, it is such a wonderful and comforting thought to know that you see me in every moment of my life and that you know my thoughts and even my motives. I know I fail along the way so I always need your mercy and your grace in forgiving me. Help me learn from each mistake I make and each sin I commit as well as from each time I overcome and stand strong. Lord, there are so many in my life that are facing physical problems, sickness and surgeries and I ask for your healing and strength for them. I pray in the name of Jesus my friend.
