Daily Devotional: Psalms 68:1-6

Ps 68:1-6

1 May God arise, may his enemies be scattered; may his foes flee before him. 2 As smoke is blown away by the wind, may you blow them away; as wax melts before the fire, may the wicked perish before God. 3 But may the righteous be glad and rejoice before God; may they be happy and joyful. 4 Sing to God, sing praise to his name, extol him who rides on the clouds--his name is the LORD--and rejoice before him. 5 A father to the fatherless, a defender of widows, is God in his holy dwelling. 6 God sets the lonely in families, he leads forth the prisoners with singing; but the rebellious live in a sun-scorched land.

2 Cor 10:2-6

3 For though we live in the world, we do not wage war as the world does. 4 The weapons we fight with are not the weapons of the world. On the contrary, they have divine power to demolish strongholds. 5 We demolish arguments and every pretension that sets itself up against the knowledge of God, and we take captive every thought to make it obedient to Christ.

This Psalm is from the king of Israel as he praises God for giving them the victory over their enemies. God had made him king and had established the nation of Israel as the greatest power in the world. Even as a huge group of vagabonds, wandering in the wilderness, God had given them victory over kings with what seemed to be much greater armies, with more power, larger numbers of chariots and horses. God had shown his power to the nations as he made them a nation of his own people and gave them a land that had belonged to others.

God is still in control of all things; the things in our personal lives that seem to be small and of no consequence as well as the nations of the earth. It is God who established the king of Israel and even though we may not understand why, it is the same God who puts rulers in power today or removes them at his will.

As we fight our spiritual battles today in a world that seems to overwhelm us with political power, with social control and with all kinds of ungodliness, we can have the victory in Jesus. The great enemy behind our problems is Satan and God has already defeated him by raising Jesus from the dead. We are victors in him!

Thank you God for loving me! You alone are God and all the world is in your hand as you carry out your will. Thank you for allowing me to be forgiven of my sin by your grace when I humbly obeyed your gospel in faith. Thank you for making me a new person in Jesus and giving your Spirit to live in my heart. Continue to mold me as you transform and renew my life into your image. Give me a greater love for the truth found in your word and give me wisdom as I study it and seek to apply it daily. Use me to help others. I pray in the name of Jesus my Lord.
