Daily Devotional: Psalms 56:9-13

Ps 56:9-13

9 Then my enemies will turn back when I call for help. By this I will know that God is for me. 10 In God, whose word I praise, in the LORD, whose word I praise--11 in God I trust; I will not be afraid. What can man do to me? 12 I am under vows to you, O God; I will present my thank offerings to you. 13 For you have delivered me from death and my feet from stumbling, that I may walk before God in the light of life.

Acts 5:29-32

29 Peter and the other apostles replied: “We must obey God rather than men! 30 The God of our fathers raised Jesus from the dead-whom you had killed by hanging him on a tree. 31 God exalted him to his own right hand as Prince and Savior that he might give repentance and forgiveness of sins to Israel. 32 We are witnesses of these things, and so is the Holy Spirit, whom God has given to those who obey him.”

When we commit our lives to Jesus, we have no choice but to serve him. This is true when we face persecution or when we are lauded for our service. There have always been those who would turn us from our commitment to God by whatever means they can use. It may be hardships or it may be deception but in the end, their goal is to make us give up on our vow to God and to fail to trust him.

In the Garden of Eden, the serpent told Eve that God did not really mean it when he said they would die if they ate the forbidden fruit. Instead of death, it would give them wisdom and besides, it looked like it would taste good. Paul says Eve was deceived so she ate it and then gave some to her husband to eat also. From that time until today, Satan is using every method at his disposal to turn us from faith in God and to keep us from being obedient to him.

We can trust God! What he says in his word is true – always true. He will keep his promises to reward and help those who are faithful to him. He will also keep his word to condemn those who rebel against him and his word. Jesus is our Prince and our Savior and will forgive our sins when we humbly accept his pardon in obedience to his gospel. He will then walk with us every step of the way.

Lord God, father of heaven and earth, you have created all things with the word of your mouth. I know there is nothing I can give you that is not already yours except my heart and my life as I commit myself to you in Jesus Christ. I am so thankful for Jesus who makes it possible for me to be forgiven of my sin and to be put into your family of believers. Thank you for the promise that you will hear me when I call to you and you will answer my prayers. Fill my heart with your Spirit so I can love others as you love me. I pray in the name of Jesus my Lord.
