Daily Devotional: Psalms 56:1-4

Ps 56:1-4

1 Be merciful to me, O God, for men hotly pursue me; all day long they press their attack. 2 My slanderers pursue me all day long; many are attacking me in their pride. 3 When I am afraid, I will trust in you. 4 In God, whose word I praise, in God I trust; I will not be afraid. What can mortal man do to me?

2 Cor 12:9-10

9 But he said to me, "My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness." Therefore I will boast all the more gladly about my weaknesses, so that Christ's power may rest on me. 10 That is why, for Christ's sake, I delight in weaknesses, in insults, in hardships, in persecutions, in difficulties. For when I am weak, then I am strong.

Excuse me while I ramble. I never cease to be amazed how some people make their living – there are so many jobs that most people never know exist. I met a man who sold fire trucks and another who sold ambulances. Now, I know they are both in every community but I had never even thought about someone selling them. I had a friend who was an engineer and was responsible for building water towers all over the southeastern United States as well as Central and South America. Sure we see them everywhere but who ever thought about the fact that there were large crews of people actually building these things?

Now to a point from all this. This friend once told me that in his long career overseeing these construction jobs, he had never had anyone fall and be killed who had been with them less than ten years. He went on to say that the first ten years the new employee was so scared of being up so high they were very careful in every step they took. However, after many years of doing this with no problem, it was easy to become careless and in so doing there were some who actually fell to their death. They knew better but did not practice what they knew.

Is this not the same in our Christian lives? It is so easy to become lax and to let down our guards and it is then that the devil will plunge in and we find ourselves involved in all kinds of sin. It does not happen overnight. We take one small careless step at a time and each with no seemingly bad consequences until eventually we are being careless in our walk with God.

Dear God, please guard my heart and keep me ever diligent in my commitment to you and to Jesus. Help me put away all sin from my life and let you truly live in me so I will become more like you every day. Forgive me when I fail and lift me when I fall. Thank you for the assurance of always being with me and for the comfort and peace this gives me each day. Use me to help others and keep me from being selfish with the blessing you give, including my time. I pray in Jesus name.
