Daily Devotional: Psalms 55:9-15

Ps 55:9-15

9 Confuse the wicked, O Lord, confound their speech, for I see violence and strife in the city. 10 Day and night they prowl about on its walls; malice and abuse are within it. 11 Destructive forces are at work in the city; threats and lies never leave its streets. 12 If an enemy were insulting me, I could endure it; if a foe were raising himself against me, I could hide from him. 13 But it is you, a man like myself, my companion, my close friend, 14 with whom I once enjoyed sweet fellowship as we walked with the throng at the house of God. 15 Let death take my enemies by surprise; let them go down alive to the grave, for evil finds lodging among them.

Rom 13:1-3

1 Everyone must submit himself to the governing authorities, for there is no authority except that which God has established. The authorities that exist have been established by God. 2 Consequently, he who rebels against the authority is rebelling against what God has instituted, and those who do so will bring judgment on themselves.

As I read the Psalm above, I could not help but think about the crime, strife and violence in the cities of our country today. There is not a day that goes by that we do not hear of murders and other violence taking place. As an emergency room nurse told me, the news media only reports a small fraction of all that actually happens. We live in a crime ridden and violent society. Why? And what can be done to stop the nonsense, hatred, bitterness and evil?

The only real answer to the problem is to realize that God is in control and only when people submit to God can the devil be defeated. As long as people look to the wisdom of this world for answers, it will only produce more strife and discord instead of giving us peace. Real peace only comes from the love of God and is found in Jesus Christ. He brings us peace for our society as a whole, our nation, our states and our churches and homes. God’s wisdom from above produces purity, is peace-loving and considerate of others. Pray for our leaders!

Heavenly Father, thank you for my life, my family, my friends and the nation in which I am privileged to live. While many claim ours is a Christian nation, we see everything but true Christianity in practice. I am sorry to say and greatly humbled to admit the greed, the hatred and violence that pervades the hearts and lives of so many. Too often, even our leaders are not acknowledging you as God and do not look to you for wisdom. Please be merciful and forgiving to us as a nation. Be with us in the upcoming elections, guide them at every level and bring us closer to your standard of what is right. I humbly pray in the name of Jesus.
