Daily Devotional: Psalms 55:1-8

Ps 55:1-8

1 Listen to my prayer, O God, do not ignore my plea; 2 hear me and answer me. My thoughts trouble me and I am distraught 3 at the voice of the enemy, at the stares of the wicked; for they bring down suffering upon me and revile me in their anger. 4 My heart is in anguish within me; the terrors of death assail me. 5 Fear and trembling have beset me; horror has overwhelmed me. 6 I said, "Oh, that I had the wings of a dove! I would fly away and be at rest--7 I would flee far away and stay in the desert; Selah 8 I would hurry to my place of shelter, far from the tempest and storm."

Phil 4:4-7

4 Rejoice in the Lord always. I will say it again: Rejoice! 5 Let your gentleness be evident to all. The Lord is near. 6 Do not be anxious about anything, but in everything, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. 7 And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.

There are times in our lives when it seems that the whole world has tumbled in on us and there is no place to turn and nowhere to go for help. All hope is gone and we are ready to give up. We, like the Psalmist, wish for the wings of a dove so we could fly away into the desert and leave behind all our worries, our afflictions and all our troubles and find the rest we so badly need.

It is then, in these dire circumstances, that we turn to God in complete assurance, knowing he will hear us and answer our prayers. Our hearts are filled with anguish and our minds are filled with darkness but we can turn it over to God and he will lift our load. He will lift us from the mire and place our feet on solid ground. He will carry us in his arms to a place of safety because he is our refuge.

When life is dark, Jesus is our light. When we seem to be alone we remember that the Lord is near. It is in the midst of the greatest storms of life that we learn the true meaning of trust in God. It is by going through the worst turmoil in life that we know and appreciate the peace of God that transcends all understanding. We rejoice in the Lord as he ever guards our hearts and minds in Christ Jesus.

O God, my heavenly Father, I thank you for your love for me. I don’t deserve to be loved by you because I have done so much to disappoint you in so many ways and I have sinned against you and your holy will. Yet, in all this you have forgiven me in Jesus Christ and you have lifted me up so I can rejoice and glorify your name to all with whom I come in contact. I need you in my life and your Spirit in my heart every hour of every day. Empower me to live for you and use me in your will. Give me wisdom to say words to help others. I pray in the name of Jesus.
