Daily Devotional: Psalms 49:1-6

Ps 49:1-6

1 Hear this, all you peoples; listen, all who live in this world, 2 both low and high, rich and poor alike: 3 My mouth will speak words of wisdom; the utterance from my heart will give understanding. 4 I will turn my ear to a proverb; with the harp I will expound my riddle: 5 Why should I fear when evil days come, when wicked deceivers surround me--6 those who trust in their wealth and boast of their great riches?

1 Tim 6:9-10

9 People who want to get rich fall into temptation and a trap and into many foolish and harmful desires that plunge men into ruin and destruction. 10 For the love of money is a root of all kinds of evil. Some people, eager for money, have wandered from the faith and pierced themselves with many griefs.

It is obvious that we live in a materialistic society. The worth of so many is measured by the amount of wealth they have amassed. When one speaks the name of Warren Buffet in regard to investing, millions listen and try to follow whatever he says. But when the markets crash, the wealth is gone.

But the Bible does not condemn being rich. In fact, some of the most faithful we read about were some of the wealthiest of their day. Abraham had great wealth. Job was the richest man in his time. David and his son Solomon had so much wealth that it could not truly be measured. Yet, God blessed them because of their faith and that is the key difference. They did not trust in their riches but trusted in God. They knew the things of this world were temporary.

David never forgot that he was who he was and had what he had because God had blessed him and given it to him. He was a lowly shepherd boy, living in the fields and tending his father’s sheep when God called him to be king. He had trusted God to deliver him and his sheep from a bear and a lion. His heart as a young boy was set on serving God. It was this same faith that enabled him to kill the Philistine giant, the hero of their army, with only a small stone projected from a sling. He trusted God and God gave him the victory.

Heavenly Father, God of the universe, holy and reverend is your name in all the earth. There is none like you in wisdom, in power or in majesty. While many think they are great and are lauded for their accomplishments, you alone are in control of all things and all people. I praise your name! Create in me a pure heart and a devoted spirit to be what you want me to be. Forgive me when I fail. Use me to teach others and to encourage those who are serving you. Help me always set the right example for others to follow. Give your peace and healing to those who are sick, injured and taking treatments. I pray in the name of Jesus my Lord.
