Daily Devotional: Psalms 40:6-10

Ps 40:6-10

6 Sacrifice and offering you did not desire, but my ears you have pierced; burnt offerings and sin offerings you did not require. 7 Then I said, "Here I am, I have come--it is written about me in the scroll. 8 I desire to do your will, O my God; your law is within my heart." 9 I proclaim righteousness in the great assembly; I do not seal my lips, as you know, O LORD. 10 I do not hide your righteousness in my heart; I speak of your faithfulness and salvation. I do not conceal your love and your truth from the great assembly.

After quoting some of the passage above, the writer of Hebrews says:

Heb 10:8-10

8 First he said, "Sacrifices and offerings, burnt offerings and sin offerings you did not desire, nor were you pleased with them" (although the law required them to be made). 9 Then he said, "Here I am, I have come to do your will." He sets aside the first to establish the second. 10 And by that will, we have been made holy through the sacrifice of the body of Jesus Christ once for all.

What a blessing it is to be redeemed and made holy by the blood of the Lamb of God, Jesus Christ. All of the sacrifices offered under the Law of Moses could not save anyone from their sin. While the law did require these, they ultimately took away sin only when the blood of Jesus was shed. These sacrifices were rituals that were required by God but they pointed out the sin of Israel and the very need of forgiveness. So each sacrifice offered reminded God of just how sinful each of the Israelites were.

As we submit to Jesus today we have his forgiveness. Our sin is removed and then it is remembered no more by God. Our hearts are then set to be like his so our will is to do the will of God in every way. As a child of God, it does not matter what we think or like or want, it is all about doing his will and being like his Son. It is our desire to be changed and molded into his image so we reflect his holiness, his purity, his love, his kindness, his compassion and his forgiveness.

O Lord God, thank you for your saving sacrifice in giving your Son to die for my sin so I can live with you in eternity. Thank you for raising him from the grave so I have the assurance that I too will be raised and given a glorious body. As I allow your Spirit to work in me, change my heart to want your will in all things. Make me become more like you as I partake of your divine image and thus reflect your goodness to those around me. I ask a special blessing today for those who are sick and suffering and for those who are facing the daily task of being caregivers to them. I ask for your healing and comfort for the sick and strength, patience and compassion for those tending to them. I pray in the name of Jesus.
