Daily Devotional: Psalms 37:30-34

Ps 37:30-34

30 The mouth of the righteous man utters wisdom, and his tongue speaks what is just. 31 The law of his God is in his heart; his feet do not slip. 32 The wicked lie in wait for the righteous, seeking their very lives; 33 but the LORD will not leave them in their power or let them be condemned when brought to trial. 34 Wait for the LORD and keep his way. He will exalt you to inherit the land; when the wicked are cut off, you will see it.

James 3:13-16

13 Who is wise and understanding among you? Let him show it by his good life, by deeds done in the humility that comes from wisdom. 14 But if you harbor bitter envy and selfish ambition in your hearts, do not boast about it or deny the truth. 15 Such "wisdom" does not come down from heaven but is earthly, unspiritual, of the devil. 16 For where you have envy and selfish ambition, there you find disorder and every evil practice.

True wisdom is seen as well as being heard. The wisdom of this world is selfish and self-seeking without regard for others. True wisdom from God is loving and seeks the good of others. When we deny the wisdom of God in our lives and seek only the things of this world, we deny the truth also. We may say all the right words that come from God and speak truth but our lives demonstrate greed and idol worship as we deify material things instead of trusting in God.

It is this worldly wisdom that prevails in our world and it leads to chaos, hatred, bitterness and all kinds of evil. It is this wisdom that does not recognize God or his word and seeks to put the intellect of mankind above the divine word of God. This is the wisdom that causes racial tensions, social struggles, discontent, hatred and all kinds of bitterness. It is from Satan and the end is disorder. In our personal lives this wisdom yields the same kind of disorder and chaos.

When we turn to God in Jesus Christ we can have the peace of God in our lives and rejoice in our hearts, even in the midst of trouble. While the world boils in upheaval, we live in peace with the assurance that God is still in control and will protect us with the ultimate promise of eternal rest and peace with him.

Thank you God for your protection, your care and the assurance that you are in control, even when I can’t see it. As I see your creation each day I am reminded of your power and your majesty and it quietens the tensions within me and allows me to release all my anxieties to you. Thank you for the beautiful flowers that bloom and for the birds that sing. I am grateful for the rain and the sunshine that nourishes the earth. Give me greater faith and use me to help and encourage others who seek to serve you. I pray in the name of Jesus my Lord.
