Daily Devotional: Psalms 36:1-4

Ps 36:1-4

An oracle is within my heart concerning the sinfulness of the wicked: There is no fear of God before his eyes. 2 For in his own eyes he flatters himself too much to detect or hate his sin. 3 The words of his mouth are wicked and deceitful; he has ceased to be wise and to do good. 4 Even on his bed he plots evil; he commits himself to a sinful course and does not reject what is wrong.

Rom 1:18-20

18 The wrath of God is being revealed from heaven against all the godlessness and wickedness of men who suppress the truth by their wickedness, 19 since what may be known about God is plain to them, because God has made it plain to them. 20 For since the creation of the world God's invisible qualities-his eternal power and divine nature-have been clearly seen, being understood from what has been made, so that men are without excuse.

When mankind exalts self above God and earthly wisdom over the wisdom that comes from above we see all kinds of evil come into play. This is exactly the trick that Satan used to deceive Eve in the Garden with the forbidden fruit. “Did God say you would die?” was his question and then quickly said they would not die but would become wise as God. The simple question for Eve at that time was should she believe the serpent or should she believe God?

God has given us everything pertaining to life and godliness in his word. By divine inspiration he has revealed all that is needed for us to know his will and to live by it. But do we fear God? Do we really respect him as God? Is Jesus really our Lord and our Master? Sure, we want Jesus to be our Savior but are we willing to let him teach us, tell us how to live and demand our obedience?

There is no excuse for anyone not serving God. We all can see his creation and that is enough to demand our respect, our trust and our obedience. It is true that we must read and study his word to know what he wants us to do but that part is simple if we respect him as creator and as our God. We will not make excuses, try to change his word to fit our thinking or alter it to fit our society. We will follow his will by trusting him and seeking to be like him in all things.

O God, increase my faith, my desire to know you and my respect for you. How awesome and reverend is your name in all the earth. Thank you for revealing your will to me and I ask for greater wisdom to be able to understand it and apply it in my life. Keep me from making excuses to not obey you. When I don’t like what your word says, help me change my heart instead of changing your word. Lord, be with those who are serving you in the face of persecution. Use me and all I have in your service that I may bring glory to you. I pray in the name of Jesus.
