Daily Devotional: Psalms 31:14-18

Ps 31:14-18

14 But I trust in you, Lord; I say, “You are my God.” 15 My times are in your hands;  deliver me from the hands of my enemies, from those who pursue me. 16 Let your face shine on your servant; save me in your unfailing love. 17 Let me not be put to shame, Lord, for I have cried out to you; but let the wicked be put to shame and be silent in the realm of the dead. 18 Let their lying lips be silenced, for with pride and contempt they speak arrogantly against the righteous.

1 Pet 1:8-9

Though you have not seen him, you love him; and even though you do not see him now, you believe in him and are filled with an inexpressible and glorious joy, for you are receiving the end result of your faith, the salvation of your souls.

David had his moments of doubt and depression but he always turned to the Lord in complete trust. He understood that without God he could not win even the smallest battle against his enemies. He knew that God was leading him and he was content to allow God to direct his steps. God was his life so he sought to follow the will of God in all he did.

Too many today seem to think that trusting God means we live our own lives with no recognition of him whatsoever until we get in trouble. It is only then that we turn to him and ask for his help. We cannot put ourselves ahead of God, our will ahead of his or our thinking ahead of his and expect him to protect us.

James explains to us that faith must be demonstrated by our actions. We can claim to know God and claim to be his but if we don’t really live for him, we are just wasting our time and fooling ourselves. He goes on to say that even the devils believe in God and they tremble at the thought of his wrath and might but that does not save them in the end and God certainly is not presently looking out for their interest or their wellbeing. We don’t want to be like the demons!

As we put our trust in him, we seek to know him more by spending time in his word and talking with him in prayer. We allow his Spirit to live in us and control us as we are molded more into his likeness each day.

O God, giver of life and all good things, I thank you and praise you for your love that never fails. Thank you for sending your Son and providing me a way of having my sins forgiven. Increase my faith so that even in the darkest moments I will trust you and your might but also when things are going good for me, help me not lose my faith or think I am handling things on my own. Lord, there are so many who are hurting and who are struggling to be faithful to you and I ask you to use me to help them in your way. I humbly pray in the name of Jesus.
