Daily Devotional: Psalms 29:7-11

Ps 29:7-11

7 The voice of the LORD strikes with flashes of lightning. 8 The voice of the LORD shakes the desert; the LORD shakes the Desert of Kadesh. 9 The voice of the LORD twists the oaks and strips the forests bare. And in his temple all cry, "Glory!" 10 The LORD sits enthroned over the flood; the LORD is enthroned as King forever. 11 The LORD gives strength to his people; the LORD blesses his people with peace.

Eph 1:1-3

1 Paul, an apostle of Christ Jesus by the will of God, To the saints in Ephesus, the faithful in Christ Jesus: 2 Grace and peace to you from God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ. 3 Praise be to the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who has blessed us in the heavenly realms with every spiritual blessing in Christ.

There are many gods in this world but none invoke the same response as does the God of heaven. The gods of the pagans, the witch doctors, the idols and the gods of the more recognized religions all bring a response of fear and offer not hope but only an endless endeavor to appease their wrath. None of these gods seeks what is best for any people on earth and none offers love and forgiveness.

The more we come to know the God of heaven, the God of the Bible and the God who created all things, the more we are inspired to cry out “Glory!” This is the response of the heavenly host when the birth of Jesus was announced to the shepherds in the field. Jesus taught that we are to let our lights shine that others will see our good works and glorify our Father who is in heaven.

Our God is Lord of heaven and earth. His wrath does not need to be appeased by us in offering up sacrifices or doing good works. His wrath has forever been appeased by the sacrifice of his Son on the cross. His acceptance of that sacrifice is demonstrated in the resurrection of Jesus from the grave. Our God is love and is filled with compassion and mercy and offers eternal life freely in Jesus Christ. He is the only way and in him are all spiritual blessings. We read in 2 Thessalonians 1:8: He will punish those who do not know God and do not obey the gospel of our Lord Jesus. We must live for him and share the gospel with the lost.

Lord God of heaven and earth, GLORY is your name. As I read of your mighty works in creation, your constant sustaining of life and your awesome hand of power in the lives of so many, I thank you and give all glory and honor to you and to you alone. Help me live in a way to bring glory to you and to your Son in all I do and say. Give me wisdom and empower me with your Spirit to have the self-control I need to be what you want me to become. Use me to encourage others as they live for you. I pray in the name of Jesus my Savior and Lord.
